There were two types of societies, but the Puritans were forced to follow one. Social order was a system to maintain and enforce certain patterns of relating and behaving. Individual freedom is being free from government oppression and regulation. The Puritans did not have a choice, so they had to follow the social order. The life of a Puritan was hard due to social order and the lack of freedom. The Puritans only focused on one religion and did not accept or practice other religious beliefs. In Arthur Miller’s essay, it states, “So now they and their church found it necessary to deny any other sect its freedom; lest their New Jerusalem be defiled and corrupted by wrong ways and deceitful ideas.” They had the right to oppose groups of people with different religions because they …show more content…

In The Crucible, Abigail and the girls accused other people for practicing witchcraft because they did not want to suffer from a severe punishment. They were the reason why the number of arrests increased and suspicions were raised in the Salem community. Lies, cover ups, and false confessions were done to try to keep social order. Some allow their fear to rebel against their way of life, but others allowed that fear to hold them back from doing the right thing. Social order suppressed the individual freedom of those that wanted to express themselves. The hysteria provided a forum for them to express the suppressed grievances they had.
