During the American Industrial Revolution, women began to work in factories, leading to conflicts in 19th century society that would eventually result in the Cult of Domesticity—the belief that women’s only responsibilities existed at home. This aimed to establish the subservient woman and the husband as the master of the house as the social norm. Kate Chopin's bleak but realistic depiction in her work, The Awakening, reveals her reasonable attitude during the Second Great Awakening in American history. Women needed to be inferior than men because of the egotistical attitudes of men. Society accepted the prejudice of genders as a social norm and following a mob mentality. The social construct of women's inferiority led to the instability of women because they were subjected to harsh treatment since this subjugation lead to panic and madness. In The Awakening by Kate Chopin, women are shown to be treated as abnormal and parallels to actions done in the 21st century. Throughout the years, the idea of women only working housewives lessened as they got involved in politics, however, inequality is still seen today. While 2017 legislation equates women to men, there are still significant social limitations on women, such as unequal pay for equal work. In January 2017, JPMorgan Chase was sued by the United States when the company was found guilty of paying women less than men, demonstrating that women are not seen as equal to men in the workplace. Although this gender conflict should no longer exist in the twenty-first century, women continue to be treated unequally to men.
