More and more college students are developing strong feelings of depression due to the spectrum of social media. The word cyber bullying may come into one’s mind due to hearing the two phrases: social media and depression. Cyber bullying is still existent, but depression amongst college students is coming from younger people seeing other peers pictures and videos from a social event that they attended. “Social media is a really easy way to feel excluded. Denise Daniels, parenting expert and pediatric nurse, states, “These kids aren’t connecting emotionally. Emails, texts- these lack the emotive qualities of face-to-face interaction..What’s the balance? According to Columbia University’s National Center on Addiction and Abuse, also known as CASA, recently polled more than 2,000 teens online or by phone. The result also showed that compared to teens who don’t visit social networking sites daily, rather than those who do are: five times more likely to use tobacco, three times more likely to drink alcohol, and twice as likely to use marijuana. Students with depression will try to do anything they can to feel more accepted by others in order to cope with depression and feel better; so, if they see other people happy by using illegal substances, then they may think that this will help them feel better or even not be depressed at all. Students who do this may feel better for a little bit, but as time goes on, it will still have a negative affect due to the fact that it can become addicting and it is also illegal.
