In every individual’s life, there are specific actions and behaviors that we conduct that are unique to ourselves as an individual. These actions and behaviors are connected to many other aspects in our life, ultimately encompassing the overall idea of a “lifestyle”. Although it is seen often as ambiguous in nature, the concept of a “lifestyle” is actually quite simple. The root of this word contains the word “style”, which is typically used to describe a specific conduct or action. However, when fixed onto the word “life”, this transitions into a more complex term. In society, an individual’s lifestyle is simply defined as the way in which that individual chooses to live their life. This includes how the individual decides to conduct their …show more content…
There are many social determinants that are present in our society, yet many of these determinants are not discussed. This is due to the fact that categorizing and discussing social groups and determinants is often seen as controversial. Although this may be true, comprehending and discussing these determinants are essential, as many of these determinants affect our health. These determinants affect our health simply by altering our own actions as well as the environment around us. This includes, but is not limited to, race, gender, socioeconomic status, education, geographical location, early childhood development, occupation, and social support. Social determinants are classified, specifically, as fixed or variable. This ultimately means that one’s classified “social determinant” is either something that is unable to be changed or is something that is able to be altered. Therefore, there are some social determinants for which the individual has a choice on whether or not their actions are controlled by those specific facets of themselves. For example, some social determinants for which an individual has no choice includes their race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status (or more specifically, the socioeconomic status for which you are born to), and early childhood development. Compared to other social determinants, these are factors to every individual that we are unable to change, due to the fact that these specific characteristics are traits that we are born with. Although some of these determinants are able to be changed, the health implications that are connected to these factors will continue to alter and change the individual’s life. For instance, there are specific health issues that affect more individuals in a specific race or gender compared to another social group, ultimately altering the individual’s health. Also, socioeconomic status is linked to many
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are increasingly becoming a major problem of Public Health around the World. The impact of resources and material deprivation among people and populations has resulted in an increase in mortality rate on a planetary scale. Social determinants of health are defined as the personal, social, economic and the environmental conditions which determines the health status of an individual or population (Gardner, 2013). Individuals with high levels of education and fall within the high income bracket turn to have stable jobs, live in the best neighborhood and have access to quality health care system than individuals who have low education and fall with the low income bracket. Social Determinants of health is the “conditions in which people are born, live, work and age that affect their health” Healthypeople.gov. (2017). Social Determinants of Health | Healthy People 2020. [online] Available at: https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topics-objectives/topic/social-determinants-of-health [Accessed 22 Sep. 2017]. The determinants of health are important because it helps create policies to make changes, as well as improving public health conditions by addressing the different health outcomes an individual can face and improving the need for healthier conditions. Healthy People 2020 organizes the determinants of health in both a social and physical determinant which has an impact on health.
Social determinants of health has been a large topic for many years and can have a positive and negative effect on individuals, families and communities. (World Health Organisation, 2009) The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels, which are themselves influenced by policy choices. Social determinants have many factors and in this essay education will be the main social determinant of health discussed and how this could have an impact on the physical and mental sides of health.
The primary factors that shape the health of an individual are the living conditions in which they experience, also known as the social determinants of health (Dahlgren and Whitehead, 1991). In agreement with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN, 2012), these are “the conditions that people work, live, grow, and age in”. The social determinants are a collective set of conditions that have many layers that influence our health (WHO, 2009). Various social determinants such as unemployment and transport are all interconnected. This creates a causal sequence that can ultimately lead to housing issues for people.
Therefore Adler et al noted that existing evidence seems to suggest that better population health would be achievable through the formulation of a health policy framework that addresses the behavioral and social determinants of health. After all, Short et al (2015) also opined that at any particular point in time, an individual’s health behaviors and health are a stark reflection of their physical endowments combined with their circumstances and experiences over time. This is within the physical and social contexts. The social milieu of health is of great importance to the overall population health. The important thing to note
Lifestyle refer to the interests, opinions, behaviors, attitudes, etc. of a specific individual, group, or society. It mostly tends to the standard of living of people. It may vary from person to person. In the same place, two persons may live with different lifestyle. One is found of rural life and other like to live an urban style. Lifestyle is more personal rather than common. The term was first used by an Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler. It is combination of both tangible and intangible factors. In tangible factors, demographic factors are included and in intangible factors personal values, preferences, and outlooks are included.
Heathy People 2020 emphasized that social determinants play an important role in the health of an individual. Examples of social determinants include availability of resources to meet daily needs, transportation options, access to mass media and emerging technologies, or exposure to physical hazards and toxic substances. For example, unsanitary housing is associated with exposures to mold, moistures, dust mites, or even lead. Places that are absent of sidewalks, bike paths, or recreational areas can discourage physical activity for some communities. As a result, these conditions in different settings can affect a person’s quality of life. Poor health outcomes are often corresponding to the interaction between people and their physical or social environments. For that reason, policies and interventions are implemented to ensure a healthier
Many social determinants of health, such as the availability of health services and resources, education, support, and socioeconomic conditions, can all be linked to ones perceived level in the social hierarchy. A higher class level correlates with a higher SES, which also means greater access to health care resources and education.
“Adler used the term "lifestyle" to refer to an individual's basic concept of self, others, and basic life goals” (Gfroerer, Kern, Curlette, White, & Jonyniene, 2011). Lifestyle is the way individuals adapt, overcome, and solve difficulties or problems in their lives. In other words, it is the ways they defeat their inferiority. According to Adler, lifestyles begin in early stages of childhood and would be established by the age of 6 and these lifestyle expressions can be s...
