Social Forces are the “Forces of the environment that include the demographic characteristics of the population and its values.” (Richard J. Ch.3) The social forces can affect the conceptual framework of marriage, education, social class, and politics. In the Nineteenth Century, many authors addressed those social forces in forms of novels. Among those authors were William Makepeace Thackeray and Thomas Hardy. This essay will compare and contrast the nature and function of society and social forces on Thackeray’s Vanity Fair and Hardy’s Tess D’Urberville.
William Makepeace Thackeray’s Vanity Fair expose the social forces of the Nineteenth Century’s Victorian Era while focusing on how it affects and motivates the aristocratic members of its society into materialistic/capitalistic pursuits.
Society and its social forces remain a central theme in Vanity Fair throughout the novel. The social forces are presented mainly in the character of Rebecca Sharp. The race to aristocracy or maintaining an aristocrat status is the main objective for Becky to pursue her overwhelming dream of a high social standing. With Social standing being a major social force in the novel, marriage to Becky was regarded as means to an end. In the beginning of the novel, Becky was interested in Joseph Sedley regardless of his awkward characteristics and unattractive manners. The only factor she cared for was his wealth noticing that “… all Indian nabobs are very rich”. (p. 15) she planned to play her charm on Joseph in hopes to acquire his wealth and boost her social standing. She believes that "If Mr. Joseph Sedley is rich and unmarried, why should I not marry him? I have only a fortnight, to be sure, but there is no harm in trying" (P. 16)

..., reading Hardy’s Tess D’Urberville and Thackeray’s Vanity Fair was of a political inspiration in reinforcing the separation of church and state and the need to introduce new political and social reform that took place in the Edwardian Era. Both novels had social forces that remained in the background till its final chapters.

The injustice within Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1881) and Robert Frost’s poetry is unjustified and causes major suffering to those illustrated in both the novel and the poetry. Numerous variations of injustice are portrayed within these works such as; social injustice, religious injustice and moral injustice. These injustices often combine together to form an upsurge of ill-treatment within the characters’ lives. Furthermore, Frost’s poems often address heavy topic matters such as suicide, child morality and human morality. Harriet Monroe supports this argument by stating ‘Such art passes local boundaries as lightly as an aeroplane and swings out into wider circles of space and time.’(Monroe: 1924:149). Hardy’s ‘Tess’ addresses problems such as the unjust treatment of women in society by their own peers, which leads to the eventual downfall of Tess in a tragic tale of cruelty and its consequences. Moreover, Wuthering Heights (1847) displays a tragic, injustice and complex world for those who suffer the infortunes of being born into this isolated microcosm.
With this sentiment in mind, Thackeray expresses his conception of the danger present when one attempts to step outside of their inherent social strata. Through depicting a world devoted to upholding the inflexible codes of society, Thackeray creates an appropriate backdrop for his humorously satirical novel Vanity Fair. At the heart of this work, the avaricious Becky Sharp, born of common blood, fights against traditional precincts by "venturing" (657) outside of her proper environs and entering into an elevated climate where the credulous yield unquestioningly to her will and the skeptics scorn her with cold indifference. Determined to secure a place in genteel society, Rebecca, disregarding the standards of society, manipulates the naive by engaging in hypocrisy and subterfuge while blinding those who doubt her with an unconquerable charm.
The Victorian era was remarkable for its rigid gender roles, which defined societal interactions. The prototypical Victorian woman existed in the domestic sphere, where she acted as a moral compass to guide her husband and children toward traditional morality. This vision was mostly limited to the middle and upper classes, but if her family’s circumstances were good, the Victorian woman might have spread her domestic, moralizing influence outside of her home to help the less fortunate. The Victorian man, on the other hand, occupied the public sphere, where he dealt with business and politics, and the more complex moral codes of the two. His home was a retreat, where he could take comfort in the morally upright space his wife made for him. However, as the period wore on, these strict gender roles proved to be too oppressive, and a “New Woman” emerged. The New Woman, as portrayed by Vivie Warren in Mrs. Warren’s Profession, steps out of the domestic sphere, a move that requires agency, moral complexity, and separation from – sometimes even emulation of – men. Because this stance was so different from the typical Victorian woman, it posed challenges not just for the New Women themselves, but for all members of society they interacted with.
In the Victorian era, in New York City, men and women roles within the society were as different as night and day. A man regardless of his extra curricular activities could still maintain a very prevalent place in society. A woman’s worth was not only based family name which distinguished her class and worth, but also her profession if that was applicable.
During the Victorian Era, society had idealized expectations that all members of their culture were supposedly striving to accomplish. These conditions were partially a result of the development of middle class practices during the “industrial revolution… [which moved] men outside the home… [into] the harsh business and industrial world, [while] women were left in the relatively unvarying and sheltered environments of their homes” (Brannon 161). This division of genders created the ‘Doctrine of Two Spheres’ where men were active in the public Sphere of Influence, and women were limited to the domestic private Sphere of Influence. Both genders endured considerable pressure to conform to the idealized status of becoming either a masculine ‘English Gentleman’ or a feminine ‘True Woman’. The characteristics required women to be “passive, dependent, pure, refined, and delicate; [while] men were active, independent, coarse …strong [and intelligent]” (Brannon 162). Richard D. Altick once stated, “a woman was inferior to a man in all ways except the unique one that counted most [to a man]: her femininity. Her place was in the home, on a veritable pedestal if one could be afforded, and emphatically not in the world of affairs”. This Victorian ideal completely changed after World War I. With the passage of the 19th amendment (guaranteeing women’s voting rights) females took on a more powerful, masculine role. This new, dominant place in society enabled women to gain power in their societies and especially over men. Women became newly carefree and because neither males nor females respected their morals, the society of the 1920’s grew to be extremely hedonistic. F. Scott Fitzgerald reflects the moral decline of the 1920’s throughout his novel The Great Gatsby. All of the female characters in The Great Gatsby come from different social classifications, but they still reject the exemplary Victorian etiquette and never hesitate to seize power. Daisy, Myrtle and Jordan are all corrupt women who are able to wield power over the men that they desire by using their positions in society.
F Scott Fitgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, is centred upon 1920’s America. In the text, characters such as Myrtle Wilson, Jordan Baker and Daisy Buchanan are all carefully constructed to reveal various attitudes held by America in the early 20th century. Overall, the construction of female characters in The Great Gatsby showcases an accurate representation of women in the time period the text was composed in.

During this era, women’s roles changed greatly as the new high social class females called the “flappers,” developed. The flappers set ideal qualities such as beauty for a woman that high class men such as Gatsby sought after. The flappers in exchange for their beauty wanted access to the material wealth from the men. Fitzgerald shows the influence that American capitalism had over this development in women through Daisy’s relationship with Tom and Gatsby. American capitalism dictates relationships, “Even in the early stages of their relationship, part of his attraction to Daisy arises from his considering factors akin to the laws of supply and demand that influence a commodity’s price” (Little). Daisy’s reason for marrying Tom Buchanan was only so she could gain the riches that Tom possessed. While Tom’s purpose was to care for Daisy in order to keep her by his side to maintain his social appearance. This social exchange forms a perception that women were nothing but extravagant economic tools for men. As both men and women desired the economic benefits of the other, the social aspects of marriage became more about greatening each other’s social status instead of one 's pursuit of love and happiness. However, since Tom is part of the old rich, the new American social marriage belief does not affect him greatly as it does with the new rising rich class because to the old rich this is very similar to their usual marriage traditions. Evidence as Tom says to his new baby girl, “I hope she will be a fool – that is the best thing a girl can be in this world” (Fitzgerald 17). As previously stated, Austen was a keen observer of the society she lived in, this fact is prominent in everything she writes, she once said in a letter to her niece, “Single women have a dreadful propensity for being poor. Which is one very strong argument in favor of matrimony” (Letters). This topic is addressed in Pride and Prejudice with the marriage between Charlotte and Mr. Collins. Mr. Collins was not by any standards a good man, “...conceited, pompous, narrow-minded, silly man” (Austen 122). But, as it happened Charlotte had to marry him because of societal standards, she could not refuse because her family was not very wealthy and she was leaving the age of high marriage potential, this was Charlotte’s only option. Austen called attention to this because it was a common thing at the time, women forced into unhappy marriages because of societal pressures (Rothman). Further, Austen employed a high class voice in this piece especially. Austen demonstrated many events in her novels that surround what the female gentry can relate, she also wrote in a way that the gentry class spoke. Jane Austen is very clear in her writing about class distinction and she uses the novel to look beyond the widely stratified community divided by social classes experienced in the 18th century in England. This distinction shows that class snootiness is simply but an illusion rather than a real obstruction to marriage, given that Elizabeth, though socially inferior to Darcy, she is not in any way academically inferior to him. In this sense, Darcy realizes that his class pretentiousness is mislaid toward Elizabeth, since she also finds out that her prejudice towards Darcy’s snobbish and superior manner is misplaced when he rescues Elizabeth’s family from a scandal and disgrace.
