So She’s An Abused Girl
Do you ever wonder why most girls are insecure? In “So I Ain’t No Good Girl” by Sharon Flake it perfectly explains why girls are insecure at a young age. This short story is about a teenage girl who gets abused by her boyfriend Raheem. Her story begins with her wanting to ride to school with Raheem. He tells her to “go to school without him cause he’s got things to do.” In reply she snaps at him and he slaps her. She reluctantly agrees to go to school without him. As the school bus is driving away, she sees Raheem kissing another girl. Flake shows how teenage girls are taught to be insecure by using realistic problems to show her character’s struggle.

“I apologize just like my momma does when my daddy slaps her. Like Raheem’s momma does too”; this is proof that she’s grown up in an area with abuse. When talking about her body, she says, “Raheem likes it that’s all that counts right.” She thinks that the only way someone will ever love her is if her looks appeal to them and she does everything exactly how they want it regardless of her own judgement. A contributing element to someone who is insecure mindset is thinking they don’t deserve someone, so they will do anything to please them. “I skip English everyday so you and me can ride to school together”; she gives up one of the biggest parts of her education to ride to school with Raheem. She holds back what she wants to say and do to please Raheem. Her willingness to do and say anything even if it goes against what she really thinks shows that she thinks that’s the only way he’ll stay with her. Large amount girls today are very insecure in a way similar to Flakes main character. Just like the main character they think that’s how they’re supposed to be treated.
