“On the Run” is almost all instrumental. The only voice we hear in the background is the listing of flights by an announcer. This song brings out another theme of the passing of time. One might say that adventurous people “Live for today” (Floyd, On the Run), however there is a laugh at the end, which some might think of a patient with schizophrenia has if the only information a person had was from a movie with a patient in this crazed like state. As the song comes to a closing all we hear are footsteps running. When I hear the footsteps I think of the move Snow White. As Snow White is in the forest she runs because of the terrifying sounds, and the stressful environment; those similar sounds that cause anxiety are present during the song.

In the book “The Boys of Winter” by Wayne Coffey, shows the struggle of picking the twenty men to go to Lake Placid to play in the 1980 Olympics and compete for the gold medal. Throughout this book Wayne Coffey talks about three many points. The draft and training, the importance of the semi-final game, and the celebration of the gold medal by the support the team got when they got home.
“See the World” by Gomez is a song well suited to the challenges faced by the main character, Thomas, in The Maze Runner by James Dashner. Thomas wakes up in an unfamiliar world known as the Glade, “empty handed, surrounded by a senseless scene”, as the song states, together with other boys who have lived there for the past two years. Without any memory of their previous lives but their names, the boys are stuck trying to figure out how to get out of the Maze without being killed by Grievers, mechanical monsters that roam the Maze each day. Being the newbie in the Glade, Thomas is tormented by other Gladers, mainly another boy named Gally. This part of the book relates to the third sentence in the song, “‘Cos now you’re trying to pick a fight
Maria Semple’s book, Where’d You Go Bernadette is about a daughter's search for answers as to where her mother disappeared to. As a reward for Bee’s perfect grades, she request a family trip to Antarctica. Her father, Elgin Branch, is a very important man to Microsoft and is rarely home. Bernadette Fox, Bee’s mother, is a former architect that won a MacArthur grant and stays in the house whenever she can do to her agoraphobia. She avoids leaving the house by having her virtual assistant, Manjula, who claims to work for a company out of India, make her calls, reservations, and orders. The book is told through various documents, which mostly emails but sometimes have accounts written in Bee’s point of view. Bernadette will slowly be pushed over
Wintergirls is a book related to eating disorders. The author’s purpose of writing this book is to inform readers what a person with an eating disorder. It depicts the inner and outer conflicts that characters like Lia and Cassie face with disorder. It all began with a competition between two characters of who can be the skinniest. Cassie dies in the attempt of winning the game. Lia, the main character in this novel, always keeps track of her food consumption. For example, one breakfast morning, Lia said she didn’t want “a muffin (410),…orange (75),…toast (87),…waffles (180)” (Anderson 5). Lia constantly keeps track of the calories she eats. Unlike Cassie who follows the path of bulimia, Lia inhibits herself from eating, therefore not getting the proper nutrients. This allows the readers to know how a person with a disorder like Lia can restrain herself from eating foods that we’re used to eating in our regular lives. Her ultimate goal frequently change, getting lower and lower each time. Lia strives for a “five hundred calories a day” (Anderson 189). Her constant change of goals allows the readers to know the struggles a girl with such a mindset may feel.
“Wild Geese” is very different from many poems written. Oliver’s personal life, the free form of the poem along with the first line, “You do not have to be good,” and the imagery of nature contributes to Oliver’s intent to convince the audience that to be part of the world, a person does not need to aspire to civilization’s standards.
“Who am I?” (Thomas 415). Many ask themselves this relevant question in times of self-doubt or ambivalence. Leona Thomas asks this question in her essay entitled, “Black and White.” As the child of a black father and a white mother, Thomas finds herself in a racial dilemma. Society punishes Thomas for being “mixed.” Through the use of the literary techniques of pathos, logos, and inductive reasoning, Thomas effectively persuades the reader that society should look beyond one’s mixture. She shows that racial orientation should not determine how a person is perceived by society, and that the people in society should stop being racist to one another.
The first thing I noticed about Kate Chopin’s “The Storm,” is that it is utterly dripping with sexual imagery and symbolism. Our heroine, if you will, seems to be a woman with normally restrained passions and a well-defined sense of propriety, who finds herself in a situation that tears down her restraint and reveals the vixen within. I wonder if it was intentional that the name Calixta makes me think of Calypso – the nymph from Greek mythology. If half of the sexual symbolism I found in this story was intentional, Chopin was a genius. I was quite taken with the sexual imagery of the colors mentioned: white, and red. There is also mention a place called Assumption, while there’s nothing written on it in the bible, I believe it’s the popular opinion of those of Christian faiths, that Mary (Jesus’ mother) going to heaven was called “The Assumption.” Again, I cannot accept that as merely a happy coincidence, I believe its mention in the story was intentional. Finally, we have the storm, so central to the theme of the story that it was named for it. In this work, as well as others by Chopin, there is a recurring theme of infidelity, or women behaving in ways that society generally doesn’t accept, women behaving badly, if you will, I cannot help but wonder if Kate Chopin used her writing to express desires that she would not otherwise have expressed.
Winter in the Blood, a Native American novel written by James Welch, takes place on a cattle ranch in Montana, around 1970. On the surface, this is a story of a Blackfoot Indian sleepwalking through his life, tormented by visions, in search of a connection to his heritage. Welch's language is, at once, blunt and poetic, and the pictures it conjures are dreamlike and disquieting. Furthermore, the narrator of the novel is disheartened by the loss of his brother, Mose, and his father, First Raise ? the two most cherished people in his life. After struggling with guilt, sorrow, and alcoholism, the narrator overcomes these down falls through re-identifying with himself and his culture? specifically through the help of his grandfather, Yellow Calf.
First of all, the audio is used brilliantly in the sequence. Sound is one of the most powerful tools in cinema. Sound cues us to form expectation and opens up the possibility for the editing. In the beginning of the sequence we see the indigenous people dancing and Willard resting on the boat. However, he is getting ready to complete his mission. When his voice-over comes into play, the audience starts to realize that Willard is becoming insane just like Kurtz, he is becoming part of the jungle and so is the audience. The scene cuts to Willard rising slowly from the water, accompanied by the song “The End” by The Doors. The tribal beat and the song mix together, intensifying the suspense. The odd thing is that the tribal beat is a diegetic sound and the song is a non-diegetic sound. In each stanza different sound effects are repeated to give you a feel of what sounds are being made in the night club. In stanza one line one “Drum on your drums, batter on your banjoes” was referring to the sound made on the drums and banjoes when they are hit and played. By the author saying words like drum and batter gives you an idea of what they could possibly be hearing in there atmosphere.
Over the years, Snow White’s story has been told in numerous different versions then its original version in 1812 by the Grimm Brothers. The main basis of the story has remained the same. Only a few minor tweaks to the story have changed. The three versions of the story that are going to be analyzed are the original story “Little Snow White” by the Brothers Grimm, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” by Disney, and “Mirror, Mirror” by Disney also. They each were created in very different times and the original story has changed over the years to appeal to the audience of that time. No matter how many versions there are Snow White is considered, one of the most cherished fairy tales of all time. They each use different methods to get their story across by using different colors, word usage, and scenes.
In the book The Hobbit music plays a big role in the novel. Most of the characters even sing there own song in the book. All the songs are different they all contain different material than the others. I can see why the author chose to include songs so this can the novel more interesting and have a feel for the emotions of each of the characters. The characters that did have their own little scene were the dwarves,the elves, and the goblins they all had their own song.
From the first stanza of this song, you get put into a scene. You know almost immediately that it is about someone, and it is the middle of December, but without stating the obvious, it paints a more illustrated picture for you. The first line states, “A winters day, in a deep and dark December” and I could almost immediately feel a cool breeze around me. When I normally think of a winter’s day, I think of people playing in the snow, and having a good time. This may be because I grew up in Southern California where there has been a lack of snow, but in my head, that is what I imagine. Having them state, in a deep and dark December, turns my attitudes to the more pessimistic way of looking at things. The image of children playing in the snow in my head has now turned to cold and dark emptiness. Reinstating my idea of emptiness, the next line follows with the simply statement, “I am alone”. Personally, I hate being alone. So to have the opening words place us in a deep and dark setting, and then state that you are alone, automatically puts me in a negative mindset.
To begin with, Hughes uses nature to demonstrate a distinct relationship amongst blacks and whites. His use of snow and night convey a point simple enough, but through the use of these metaphors, he enables the story to be less invasive and more appealing to everyone that experiences "On the Road". Hughes' main character, Sargeant, is left doubting the goodness of life. "Sargeant didn't see the snow, not even under the bright lights of the main street, falling white and flaky against the night. He was too hungry, too sleepy, too tired" (Hughes 1). For almost two hundred years white people have suppressed the black population. Hughes' use of snow and night give us perfect example. Sargeant was tired of fighting, tired of surviving, tired of hoping, and most of all tired of the white people who've suppressed and tormented his life.
