Are girls powerless? And do men control their lives? The story Snow White and the Seven Dwarves by Grimms’s Brothers, is a story about a girl who was born into beauty, which leads her step mother to be jealous to commit horrible crimes to become the fairest of them all. Snow White is given another chance because she can get married to a man that admires her beauty. In the story “Snow White” girls are represented as if they don’t have any control over their lives; in the story men are given most of the power, Snow White is a powerless protagonist, and her problems with beauty make her hated by her step mother. Snow White is described as a beautiful woman who had “Skin white as snow, lips red as blood, and hair as black as ebony.”(Grimm’s, 16). The story portrays that, girls who are beautiful are “good” and girls that are bad are “bad”; for example Snow White is described to be beautiful and is good, and when her step mother poisons her she is described as a “old peddler woman” (Grimm’s ,78) who isn’t as beautiful as Snow White and is considered to be bad. A symbol that represents Snow Whites mother is the apple used to poison Snow White because the apple is described to be beautiful from the outside but bad from the inside, and this character trait matches Snow White’s step mother, because she is willing to kill her own daughter to become the fairest of them all. The apple is simply an illusion of beauty, purity and youth that Snow Whites step mother wishes to have. Snow Whites step mother know that her beauty will not last forever and the she’s only going to get older over time and this creates jealousy between her and her daughter because Snow White is young and beautiful. Snow Whites step mother wants to become the fairest of them all so she could gain attention for her beauty, and this would give her even more power within her society.
