“Privacy is the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people”. (Dictionary.com) In our society, we have lost the sight of the true meaning of privacy and its importance to us as humans and our rights. There is a certain relationship between privacy, a person's dignity and freedom. When you respect a person’s privacy it is as though you are acknowledging the person’s right to the freedom that they deserve and you are recognizing them as an independent human being by respecting their space. This shift brings new issues such as the right of privacy that is being threatened by the access information that has been exposed to society. Social media is a prime example of this, of how our rights as human beings have been intruded on. There are so many appliances that we use in our everyday lives that have been misleading and are privacy threats. There is an app in particular that has promoted their brand of being one of the safest apps titled Snapchat. It’s your business- On mobile. Snapchat was founded in September of 2011. With this new discovery, everyone flocked toward it. In a matter of months, Snapchat passed twitter in daily usage.The app blew up quickly, with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg even allegedly offering $3 billion in 2013 – as of January 2017, Snapchat is valued at $25 billion or higher (Rousseau, 2017). Snapchat began with many basic features. The name fits with it because all you would have to do is take a picture and post it. Eventually, as snap chat evolved people were able to do more with it such as sending ‘snaps’ to a mutual friend and eventually make videos titled ‘stories ‘. As the application evolved and times changed the features became more enhanced, now you could comment on someone’s picture and create conversations with them. The personal connection Americans have with their phones, tablets, and computers; and the rising popularity of online shopping and social websites due to the massive influence the social media has on Americans, it is clear why this generation is called the Information Age, also known as Digital Age. With the Internet being a huge part of our lives, more and more personal data is being made available, because of our ever-increasing dependence and use of the Internet on our phones, tablets, and computers. Some corporations such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook; governments, and other third parties have been tracking our internet use and acquiring data in order to provide personalized services and advertisements for consumers. According to the constitution, the Fourth Amendment serves to protect the people from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government. Unreasonable is the word that tips the balance On one side is the intrusion on individuals’ Fourth Amendment rights and the other side is legitimate government interests, such as public safety. What we consider reasonable by law, the government might not think so. The government should have stricter laws so they cannot just take people’s emails and messages. At the same time though people need to be a lot smarter on social networking sites. Putting all your information up is just asking for it. Maybe legislation does need to step in, and put requirements on these sites. Also, Google Maps should not be able to take street view pictures from their satellites. It violates people’s personal privacy. Hopefully in the future this will be made illegal or at least have tougher restrictions. No matter what happens in the future internet privacy and also just privacy in general will continue to be a hot topic in society for years to come.

Perhaps the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, said it best when he claimed that privacy is no longer a “social norm.” Virtually everyone has a smart phone and everyone has social media. We continue to disclose private information willingly and the private information we’re not disclosing willingly is being extracted from our accounts anyway. Technology certainly makes these things possible. However, there is an urgent need to make laws and regulations to protect against the stuff we’re not personally disclosing. It’s unsettling to think we are living in 1984 in the 21st century.
If people feel comfortable in their surroundings then privacy is not a concern. At other times, people feel violated when they are subject to random searches; this random factor is what other people consider wrong. People feel intruded on when they see a roadblock ahead or a request to see their driver’s license when writing checks. Others are interrupted at dinner by the phone ringing from telemarketers. This selling of information is what the Europeans call data protection. If the data is not kept private, things such as credit card numbers could be stolen over the phone.
Privacy can be experienced in a number of forms. Alan Westin defined four states – or experiences – of privacy: solitude, intimacy, anonymity, and reserve. Solitude is a physical separation from others (31). Intimacy is a “close, relaxed, and frank relationship between two or more individuals” resulting from the “corporate [collective] seclusion” of a small unit (31). Anonymity is the “desire of individuals for times of 'public privacy'” (32). Lastly, reserve is the “creation of a psychological barrier against unwanted intrusion [which] occurs when the individual's need to limit communication about himself is protected by the willing discretion of those surrounding around him” (32). As technology penetrates society through Internet sites, smartphones, social networks, and other modes of technology, questions are raised as the whether lines are being crossed. People spend a vast majority of their time spreading information about themselves and others through these various types of technology. The problem with all these variations is that there is no effective way of knowing what information is being collected and how it is used. The users of this revolutionary technology cannot control the fate of this information, but can only control their choice of releasing information into the cyber world. There is no denying that as technology becomes more and more integrated into one’s life, so does the sacrificing of that person’s privacy into the cyber world. The question being raised is today’s technology depleting the level of privacy that each member of society have? In today’s society technology has reduced our privacy due to the amount of personal information released on social networks, smartphones, and street view mapping by Google. All three of these aspects include societies tendency to provide other technology users with information about daily occurrences. Instagram was founded in 2010 by Kevin Systrom. Kevin was born on December 30, 1983 in Holliston Massachusetts. As a child, he was introduced to a game called Doom 2, which spark an interest in computer programming.
