Have you ever had the fear of not being able to breathe while sleeping? Well, many Americans have to deal with this every single night. Many people are undiagnosed and unware that they even have this condition. If untreated, sleep apnea can cause people who have it to do poorly in everyday activities (“Sleep Apnea”). Today, I am going to be informing you about sleep apnea. I chose to research sleep apnea because I had never heard of it before and I didn’t know it was as common as it is. I also love researching new topics and discovering things that I don’t know much about. I’ve prepared for this speech by researching my topic and using many websites and sources for finding information about sleep apnea. First, I will be talking about what sleep apnea is, the two types of sleep apnea there are, and the symptoms and effects of it as well. Sometimes people can stop breathing in their sleep for up to a minute or longer (“Sleep Apnea Information for Individuals”). The two types of sleep apnea, are obstructive and central. Obstructive sleep apnea, is when a person stops breathing because their airway has been closed up or blocked. While central sleep apnea is when a person stops breathing because the brain is having problems signaling the muscles to breathe (“Sleep Apnea”). Some symptoms of sleep apnea include attention problems, irritability, headaches, insomnia, dry mouth or sore throat, and loud snoring (Mayo Clinic Staff). Some effects from sleep apnea may include diabetes, headaches, depression, heart problems, high blood pressure, and strokes (“Sleep Apnea”).
