All over the country, women and men color their hair. Some color their hair to cover grey and have a younger appearance, while others color their hair for the fun of it. According to a 2008 poll by Clairol, seventy-five percent of American women color their hair, and eighty-eight percent of women feel their hair has an effect on their confidence. Skin tone plays a huge factor with respect to what hair color best suits a person and what color will make them feel more confident; darker skin complexions will not be able to pull of the same color hair as someone who has a lighter complexion. Some hair color lines can go up to a level twelve. Level six being a dark blonde to a level ten or twelve being the lightest blonde. Unless a person is naturally blonde, they can not go blonde without bleaching their hair first. Bleach hair will strip all the melanin out of the client’s hair to bring to a high level. If a brunette is going blonde, they may experience a lot of unwanted warm tones after bleaching (Milady). From that point, the stylist can use hair color as a toner to get rid of the unwanted tone, and to get the correct shade of blonde. Warm blonde hair tends to have a yellow, orange bronze, or golden tone to it. Warm blonde hair can tend to look brassy due to all the warm tones in it. Creating illusions with hair color can also be known as “special effects haircoloring” Using light colors will draw the eye to that specific area, creating more attention. Adding warm light colors will also create the illusion of more volume. Using darker and cooler colors will give the illusion of little volume, and the area to look like it is receding. Adding warm and cool tones, along with light and dark colors will really add dimension especially in darker hair colors.
