Years of sun tanning or being out in the sunlight for a long time may lead to wrinkles, dryness, age spots, and even cancer." One of the common growths that adorn a senior's body are known as skin tags. Skin tags are small growths of tissue that emerge from many places on the body. The most common places are the eyelids, chest, groin, and anywhere that has folds of skins. If it causes emotional issues because of the way it looks or causes pain due to rubbing, chafing, or catching on clothing, then they can be easily removed in an outpatient setting. Skin tag removal may cause bleeding that last for a day or more based on the size of the skin tag and the area it was removed from. This is part of the reason they should not be removed at home but in a sterile environment where they can be properly treated. In a few cases, a suture may be placed at the removal site. In such cases, elder care personnel may be able to help with a dressing change if your loved one is not able to reach it or is inhibited in some other way. Researchers do not know what causes skin tags, but they are more common in the obese, during pregnancy, and in people with diabetes. They typically occur in areas where there is frequent friction with clothing or other areas of skin.
