The Sistine Chapel went through a huge restoration process in the 1980’s and the 1990’s to get rid of the grim that had built up among the years. There had been a lot of controversy over it, where some people were all for it and others, well not so much. Many people thought the painting looked good as is and cleaning the ceiling would take away from his artwork, and others thought the restoration would do it good. Restorers went through the long fourteen-year challenge to finally get all the build up off of the ceiling frescoes.
The main debate on the restoration of the Chapel was, “had Michelangelo modified his finished fresco with secco paint after the plaster had dried?” and if he had, “did the restorer’s removal of every layer down to the frescoed plaster falsified the artist’s intentions?”
The restoration had also brought up a couple of other questions, like “whether the monetary interests of the church and the publics freedom to visit the chapel will be tempered so the paintings can be preserved for future generations” and the issue over who had been sponsoring the project while it was going on. …show more content…

He not only thought it was “gaudy”, but what the figures had been wearing in the paintings just overwhelmed their faces and bodies to the point where they didn’t even look life like anymore, just flat objects. He seemed to like the ceiling in its entirety before even touching it with the cleaning substances; you could see all the bright colors in the paintings and the images looked so life like and lovely. He said, “The bright colors that so startled the art world must have been put there by the artist.” The bright colors that we all love to look up at seemed to prove what Michelangelo had been trying to show the world all
