My experience at the baylor "Siren's Song" A Cappella Choir concert was definitely an interesting one. I had very mixed feeling about the concert. During this concert, I experienced had a range of emotions from boredom to real interest and respect. In total, the choir sang 9 songs and each one was different than the last. Only about four of the songs were in english, and the others were in german, spanish, and hebrew. Unfortunately, probably due to my untrained ear, I had to strain to really understand the songs that were in english, let alone German. Although every once in awhile I would hear words such as “Blumen”.

On November 16th, 2013, I attended a concert choir, fall choral concert. This event took place on the Wheaton College Campus, in the Edman Chapel at 7:30 pm. The chapel was well-lit, with long pews for the audience to be seated. The concert began with the audience looking up into a balcony, where the ensemble stood in neat rows. They watched the conductor, who stood on a stage in front of the audience, waiting for their cue.

I particularly enjoyed Benjamin Bloomfield as baritone soloist; he had such tremendous intensity and power to his voice, and his abilities are something the likes of which I have never heard in person before. I did enjoy Brahm’s Requiem, but would’ve preferred if more of the concert consisted of English pieces, as the language barrier prevented me from understanding exactly what the composer’s intentions were. As a college student, I did not like the price of the concert, costing 20 dollars when purchased online. This concert has introduced me to a new form of live musical entertainment, and I now plan on attending similar performances in the future. I would recommend this concert and any other performance by the Rochester Oratorio Society to anyone interested in experiencing something new. Overall this concert was certainly worth every penny and then some.
Among the various tools Dante Alighieri employs in the Commedia, his grand imaginative interpretation of life after death, scenes involving figures and beasts from classical mythology provide the reader with allegories and exempla effectively linking universal human themes with Christian thought and ideology. Among these, the figure of the Siren, found in Canto 19 of the Purgatorio, exists as a particularly sinister and moribund image. Visiting Dante in a dream upon the heights of Mount Purgatory, the Siren attempts to seduce the sleeping traveler with her sweet song. Dante finds himself on the brink of giving in to her deadly charms when Virgil, through the intercession of a heavenly lady, wakes him from this troubled slumber (Purgatorio 19.7-36). A complex image, Dante's Siren demonstrates the deadly peril of inordinate earthly pleasure masked by a self-fabricated visage of beauty and goodness, concurrently incorporating themes of unqualified repentance and realization of the true goodness of things divine.
Every performance was presented with charm. The flashing, changing colors seem to go along with the performances. The director was humorous. The performers outfits were on point too. I liked the color coding of the vocalists, Jeremy, Jordan, and Rowan. Also, Julie wore a pretty suede dress and had a great voice. It was nice to see her come out for the 2nd time to sing. When Spencer kept playing his saxophone in some of the performances, it was just amazing. Some of my favorite performances were Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, Ain’t too Proud to Beg, In a Sentimental Mood, and more. It really made me feel like I was in New Orleans all over again. I absolutely love Otis Redding and The Temptations music, so I wasn’t new to these songs they played. I was sitting in the back (R-125) where I felt comfortable to bob my head to the music. If I ever come back to see another concert, I will make sure to get a seat in the back again. I adore Jordan that did sung the Temptations song. I thought it was exciting to see his enthusiasm while on stage keeping us engaged, but everyone did great in their own way. The song by Duke Ellington made me feel melancholy, the piece was soft. I just couldn’t believe how well everyone contributed and gave an outstanding
Throughout the musical, the prowess of each individual performer was on display. Every performer, with the exception of Kristine, expressed a power and vibrato that was breathtaking; the highest notes lilting and the lowest notes thundering. I was in awe during a majority of the performances because of the commanding singing in each performer.
I believe our choir is filled with ambitious and talented young ladies. With confidence, focus, and the desire to succeed; I think our choir could be unstoppable. In order to perform to the best of our ability, there are a few things we need to fix in our songs.
Sitting in a clinic in Nepal, I picked up the only newspaper that was in English and stared at the section dedicated to the Grammy Awards. There by the headline was Sam Smith, standing with a grin, cradling his four Grammys. I turned to my friend and stated, “I want to win a Grammy.” As I sat there, hearing myself vocalize a hidden dream, I waited, expecting some sort of encouraging spiel on how I could accomplish anything I wanted if I worked hard enough. Instead, she tilted her head as she said with a smile, “Well, you’ll have to sing in front of your friends first.” She was right. In order for me to be on that stage, thanking my mother for her endless encouragement, I would need to set aside all those drive blocking reasons I couldn’t be a musician. It is scary, realizing my dream and knowing that it will not be easy. When I think about singing, composing, spreading my message, sharing my voice, I am filled with excitement and anxiety.
For centuries, brilliant composers released their works of music that became important part Christian churches. The result of these music works - a huge number of hymns, oratorios and other musical works. Nowadays, they use the organists and the heads of the church choirs around the world. I have attended one of Christian concerts that I would never attend myself. I have completed eight years of music school playing piano. I do not have any good memories of it for I have never enjoyed it. I was that girl playing piano inform of all teachers and parents with their kids. Greek mythology may have been created thousands of years ago, but the lessons learned from the legends are still pertinent today. While there may not be gods and goddesses walking among mortals, the same conflicts that existed in the myths still exist now. One of the more popular myths in Greek mythology is about the three Sirens. As half-woman, half-bird hybrids, they were ugly creatures who had to overcompensate with the sounds of their voices. Whenever a ship or boat of sailors would pass by the island they lived on, they would sing a hypnotically beautiful song which lured the sailors to their death by jumping into the water and swimming towards the voices. Sailors that swam up to shore were greeted by the deadly Sirens. Greek literature
On Wednesday, May 23rd, I attended the College Choir concert in the Reamer Campus Center. The choir performed a variety of songs, ranging from pieces in Latin to traditional American folksongs. Two of the pieces featured solos, and one even featured percussion instruments. Mrs. Elinore Farnum provided piano accompaniment for each of the songs, and performed beautifully. I was extremely impressed by the talented choir members and their ability to sing such a varied range of songs.
The sirens are a significant factor in Homer’s Epic poem ‘The Odyssey”, they have been reinterpreted throughout the years in many different mediums such as TV, movies, and other works of literature. One of the most notable manifestations is the poem The Sirens Song by Margaret Atwood. Ms. Atwood's portrayal of the mythical creatures is similar to Homer's but at the same time it is quite different.
What do you think about when you think of singing? Do you think about the latest rock or pop craze? Or do you think about some opera singer on stage? For me, when I think about singing, I think about All City Choir.
In conclusion, the concert was really interesting and I enjoyed myself. In my opinion the two pieces that I really like in this concert, are Sounden Horn and Polonaise from Engine Onegin, the shift between the melodic lines and the element of beauty is what made me like it. In the future I would recommend it to my friends and I will not mind to go with them at all. This kind of music is the best to me by far.
Song is an art that having created from a combination of word known as lyrics and rythem to ensure the beautiful melody. According to Allan (2014), people’s attitude are affected by their favourite song. People tend to have calmness when listening to music. Chen and Chen (2009) state that listening to the English song is considered as one of the effective teaching style to motivate elementary school students to learning English. People have a different taste of music. They can find the excitement of music through a different genre such as a cappella song, ballad song and nasyid song.
