: A popular Jamaican quote which says “Ben di tree while it young, cause when it old it a go bruk,” written by an unknown author simply means that you should discipline your children and teach them the right way when they are young, because trying to do it when they are older might be too late for them and yourself. This quote brings out the essential meaning of the movie “Gifted Hands” as Ben’s mother pushed him to greatness while he was a child growing up in a lower-class family. “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. This popular bible verse speaks about determination and the righteousness of God. We can aspire to be anything we want in life and meet any goal we desire if we have God in our life. Ben wasn’t the brightest student in his class, he received bad grades and felt that he was dumb. But he didn’t give up, he was very determined and passionate about his goals. He loved science and desired to become a doctor and he read many books and educated himself. Ben was very eager to learn and discover new things, concepts and ideas. He started to improve in school and got better grades. His mother pushed him to greatness as she was that driving force in his life and because of his passion and desire for greatness, he fulfilled his goals. His mother was always telling him, “You can do anything anyone else can do, only you can do it better.” These were the words of inspiration that paved the way to success for him. When he became a doctor, and started his internship he was never qualified to do a lobectomy, and he operated on a patient without permission and if the man had died his career would have ended, but instead he was congratulated on taking the proper action and he never limited himself. Today, single parenting seems to be a prevalent issue. Ben’s mother underwent so many struggles in life. She was a foster child and got married when she was thirteen years old and found out that her husband was cheating on her and divorced him. She was illiterate and at times called herself dumb, she feared that her two children would turn out like her. As a single mom, she was the main driving force in her sons’ life. She even became strict because she was serious about her sons’ education. She wanted them to achieve what she couldn’t when she was younger. She was an authoritative parent as she gave them reading assignments to complete and allowed them to study their time tables. Because of her parenting style and her role as a single mother Ben excelled in school and defied the odds. Natalie C. Ernst in her article “The Psychology of Parenting styles” stated that “Authoritative parents are classified as the healthiest parenting style…they are demanding and responsive, assertive but not intrusive or restrictive…It also has an influence on psychological maturity while often helps children perform better in
