Most people have a tradition of some sort, like Thanksgiving or Christmas, even birthdays, but the traditions in these two dystopian stories take “tradition” to a whole new level. Suzanne Collins’ novel “The Hunger Games,”and in the movie directed by Gary Ross, an annual contest between districts takes place to remind the post-apocalyptic country of Panem that they should never rebel against the Capitol. And in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”, an annual lottery is hosted by each of the villages, where the townspeople draw and get what they need.
