Sarah & Angelina Grimke are two of the most famous women abolitionists in the 19th century.They were from a slaveholding family in Charleston,but they wrote and spoke out against slavery. Sarah was the oldest of the two sisters by 13 years. They became the first female representatives of the American Anti-Slavery Society to tour and speak to mixed audiences of men and women. While they were legends in their own lifetimes. Together they made history. Daring to speak before “promiscuous” or mixed crowds of men and women. They also published some of the most powerful anti-slavery pieces of the antebellum era. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were some of the most powerful women in the U.S. in the 1800s. These two women had many things in common. They were both abolitionist, speakers, and authors. Susan herself was the NAWSA’s first president, and Elizabeth’s life efforts helped her bring up the 19th Amendment. I stated that everybody had the right to vote. Both, of these women had or were apart of a company were Susan managed and Elizabeth wrote. They were a powerful team they actually printed an illegal paper called the “Revolution”. They actually met each other for the first time in 1851.
In Julie Roy Jeffrey’s, The Great Silent Army of Abolitionism, the main argument is that although many historians have only focused on the male influence towards eliminating slavery, it was actually women who were the driving force and backbone of abolitionism. Jeffrey explores the involvement of women, both white and black, in the cause and uses research from letters, societal records, and personal diary entries to delve into what the movement meant in their lives. The first chapter of Jeffrey’s book is entitled “Recruiting Women into the Cause;” it goes into detail about how women first got involved in the abolitionist movement. This involvement mainly started in 1831 when women began submitting publications, such as poems, about anti-slavery in a newspaper, published by William Lloyd Garrison, entitled the Liberator. In 1832, Garrison started a women’s section/department in his newspaper in the hopes that it would encourage women to get involved.

While women in the movement at first focused their efforts upon emancipation, the intense criticsm that greeted their activities gradually pushed some of them toward an advocacy of women's rights as well. They discovered that they first had to defend their right to speak at all in a society in which women were expected to restrict their activities to a purely domestic sphere. Angelina and Sarah Grimke , left South Carolina because they were swept up in the religious current called the "Second Great Awakening" and felt that Philadelphia Quakers offered a surer form of saving their souls than the Protestant ministers of Charleston. During their influential speaking tour in 1837, about the anti-slavery movement, everyone wanted to hear them, so they broke the prohibitions against women speaking in public and, when clergymen opposed such public speaking by women, they launched the women's rights movement.
Overall, Angelina and Sarah Grimké’s contribution to the Abolition and women’s rights movements were pivotal to our country’s toleration today. Although coming from a family where they would never have to encounter any issues due to their social status ; Angelina and Sarah devoted their lives to people that were less fortunate than they were. They also, paved the way for women to be equal to men, to have a voice, and to be heard. The sisters risked their lives and reputations through their dedication and courage to promote what they believed what right and to ensure a future where all people were treated fairly.
In the novel Missing Sarah by Maggie deVries she writes and illustrates a sad tribute to the memory of her sister, Sarah. The author Maggie deVries makes a clear connection between Sarah's adoption by her family and Sarah's incredibly sad life. In her story Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs presents what life was like living as a female slave during the 19th century. Born into slavery, she exhibits, to people living in the North who thought slaves were treated fairly and well, how living as a slave, especially as a female slave during that time, was a heinous and horrible experience. Perhaps even harder than it was if one had been a male slave, as female slaves had to deal with issues, such as unwanted sexual attention, sexual victimization and for some the suffering of being separated from their children. Harriet Jacobs shows that despite all of the hardship that she struggled with, having a cause to fight for, that is trying to get your children a better life
Harriet Jacobs’ narrative is a powerful statement unveiling the impossibility and undesirability of achieving the ideal put forth by men and maintained by women. Jacobs directs her account of the afflictions a woman is subjected to in the chain of slavery to women of the north to gain sympathy for their sisters that were enslaved in the south. In showing this, Jacobs reveals the danger of such self disapprobation women maintained by accepting the idealized role that men have set a goal for which to strive. She suggests that slave women be judged by different standards than those applied to other women. Jacobs develops a moral code that apprises the specific social and historical position of captive black women. Jacobs’ will power and strength shown in her narrative are characteristics of womanly behavior being developed by the emerging feminist movement.
Sarah Grimké struggled against the dictates of her family, society and religion. Sarah grew up in a large family, her father was a Jurist and her mother overlooked the home and yard work. Sarah had a certain standard which she was expected to mold into the perfect Southern Belle who marries a well off lad from a respected family, but Sarah had issues filling the mold. It all began when Sarah witnesses Miss Rosetta, a family slave, get whipped. This experience scared Sarah in one of the worst ways it made he go muted for several weeks, and once she got her voice back she had a stutter. But this experience also planted the seed of an early abolitionist. On Sarah’s eleventh birthday Sarah received her own personal slave, named Hetty, But Sarah despised the thought having a slave of her own, so she snuck into her father’s office and wrote up a document declaring that she wished to free Hetty. Sarah latter found the document ripped up by her mother. Sarah was devastated that she had a slave that she could not free. Latter on her father
Judith Sargent Murray and Sarah Grimke were both advocates in search for a change in women’s rights. They had many people that disagreed with their views about women's rights, especially men. Nonetheless, they were brave for standing up to their beliefs on what was better at the time. They were both some of the primary advocates in the women suffrage movement that shaped the rights of women in the past and in the present. Murray and Grimke had many ideas in common although, some differences in their views were present.

There’s was a home environment that stressed religious independence, education, and general equality. Grace grew up observing her father, a Civil War veteran in court arguing as a lawyer. The beginning of the movie begins with the exact same scene between Anna and Caleb that appears in the book. However, the movie, Sarah Plain and Tall has a variety of differences from Patricia MacLachlan’s children’s novel Sarah Plain and Tall. Essentially the movie had to go to a deeper level in order to attract adults to the story. Every event that is in the book happens in the movie. However, the movie adds scenes and complicates the relationships between the characters.
