A samurai warrior was a member of a powerful Japanese military. On the other hand, a knight warrior was a man of noble birth who after a couple stages, would be raised to honorable military rank. While knights and samurais have many similarities, in a one on one battle, the advantage would be to the samurai and this can be seen in their armor, beliefs, and their training techniques. In Europe and Japan the empires were falling and Clans were taking over Japan. The government came up with an idea to create feudalism. There was an agreement in both Europe and Japan that exchanged land for protection. The similarities between Samurai and Knights were greater than the differences. This can be shown by looking at the three most similar areas: social position, training and armor, and life, honor, and death. He would usually become a knight around age 21.” This is a pretty big difference because this means the knight had to train longer and serve another family member before becoming a knight. Samurai became a samurai at age 14 when a knight would usually become a squire.

To even be considered for becoming a knight, there were certain requirements that decided their eligibility. A knight’s eligibility was dependent on their noble lineage for they had to be able to trace their history back to knights in their family (the early knights became nobles) (Keen 143). The Rules of the Knights Templar also stated in 1250 that before entering the Order, they had to be knighted, be son or descendant of a knight, and could not serve as a sergeant in the military (Norman 141-142). They also had to be a noble so that they could to be able to pay for expensive and lavish dubbing ceremonies and the rising costs of armor and weapons (Keen 144). If the person met all of the requirements, they started their training to become a knight. Boys were sent to the households of uncles or greater lords to become pages (Gravett 10). As a page, they learned how to serve knights and attend to noble ladies as well as court manners and other good behaviors (Gravett 10). Then at age 14 they were apprenticed by a knight to be his squire (Gravett 10). A squires duties were to look after master's armor and horses, put on his armor, and help their master if he was unhorsed or hurt in battle (Gravett 10). Squires also needed to learn how to carve their meat properly as well as learn how to shoot their bows properly (Gravett 10-11). Not only a squire’s training was used to teach them skill and horsemanship, but was also used to harden them for pain and battle (Norman 151). Their training included fighting and learning how to make money as well (Jones 166). So they practiced with other squires or with their masters, learning how to fight with swords, throwing stones, javelins, bucklers, and quarterstaffs (Gravett 10). Other weapons included lances, maces, axes, and bows (Norman 143). Squires would even sometimes be given weapons two times their weight to develop muscles
There are many historical aspects of the Japanese, but the most interesting is the history of the Samurai. In Japans history war played a large role in the country. Controlling clans fought for parts of the land and overall control of the country. These clans were powerful families that resided in the country and who all wanted power and control of Japan for themselves. The families that would be in control were known as Shoguns. These shoguns would have warriors that fought for them if any of the other clan families would try to attack him in order to overthrow him and take his power from him. ...e respect, honor, and loyalty make this difference for me, but there is something to be said about the comparison. I find that the knights are very efficient, great warriors, and are very similar to samurai’s in a lot of ways. They both wear armor, they both train from a young age, and both are taught about honor, loyalty, and respect; but samurais are taught more effectively in their training, and the Japanese concepts were better. So to answer the essential question of this essay, I would say that there is certainly a large amount of similarities between the two warriors, but if you would consider the samurai’s skills that are better, or enhanced; to be differences, than I would have to conclude with no. The ‘differences’, are far too great in my opinion to say that the similarities are so great that they are almost the same, because they are very different indeed.
