Art is a demonstration of ones innermost thoughts, ideals, and perspective of the world the artist dwells. Often to capture such in depth elements of life the easy manner in which to go about this demonstration of self is to tell relatable stories. These stories can be visible paintings on a canvas or drawings on piece of paper, they can be heard through songs and poetry, and these stories can also be read through the works of literature. However, there is something about literature that sets itself apart from the other expressive art forms that allows for its message to transcend further than any of the other art forms. Examples of this in history are in the insurmountable play by William Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet, and the great poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. In both of these works of literature the main characters are plagued by their past. In Romeo and Juliet’s situation, the past of their families, “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes a pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life… do with their death bury their parents’ strife” (Shakespeare 3-6, 8). The central conflict of the entire play “Romeo and Juliet” exist do something that began long before the two main characters fell in love, long before the events of the play occurred. The conflict within this play deals with the forbidden love of the couple Romeo and Juliet as described in the quote from the prologue above. The love of these two characters is forbidden in this play due to the long family feud that rages between the couples family. The conflict becomes so dramatic and hysterical it leads to the awful deaths of the two main characters Romeo and Juliet. Ultimately the plot of Romeo and Juliet ends in peril and tragedy because the pasts of the families could not be conquered and lead to death of two young lovers who were innocent of the
