Shakespeare was a very influential writer, and his themes are evident throughout many modern movies and plays. In the play Macbeth and the movie Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, there are some characters that have very similar characteristics and the most obvious one is Macbeth and Anakin Skywalker.
In Macbeth, Macbeth was a very ambitious character. As the play begins, the audience knows Macbeth to be a hero on the battlefield. He was held in high esteem for fighting in the war. The big problem comes into play when Macbeth hears his fate foretold. Three witches appeared and shared with him great news: they told him he was to be King one day. Their ambition was the guide that took them there. In looking at the similarities between both Anakin and Macbeth, the audience may come to the conclusion that knowing one’s own future and knowing one’s own fate can change a person in even the most fundamental of ways. Macbeth and Anakin were both very honorable and noble people until they learned of their fates. Maybe Shakespeare was entreating the viewers of the play to philosophically question why individuals are not aware of their own ultimate fate or the fates of others. Maybe Shakespeare believed that the knowledge of the end result would change a person’s immediate actions and alter the person completely. What would you do if you knew you were destined to be a king one day? Or, what would you do if you found out your wife was destined to die in childbirth? It would probably change your immediate actions and control you, just like it controlled Anakin and Macbeth. In all honesty, were they the villains, or were the witches and visions to blame? Part of life is not knowing what lies ahead of you. When someone tells you exactly what tomorrow brings, it can take the life out of someone by consuming them to the point in which they are not who they once were. Time becomes an enemy and obstacle that must be defied by choices and actions that previously may never have been considered.
