Clueless, directed by Amy Heckerling is an extremely successful adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, as the 19th century novel is transformed in to a modern day film dealing with contemporary issues while maintaining parallels with the original. Clueless is a parody, as Heckerling makes fun of the modern world, as well as Cher who is the subject of dramatic irony. The film starts by displaying a stereotypical Hollywood privileged teenage lifestyle. Cher is seen choosing her outfit on a custom-built computer program that controls her wardrobe, but this is real life for the teenagers existing in this Beverley Hills world. Heckling comedies this materialism as Cher asserts in a voice over that she “actually (has) a way normal life for a teenager.” …show more content…

Obvious similarities are made between Cher’s school classes, shopping outings, makeovers and her telephone obsession with Emma’s realm of outings, visits and dancing. Heckerling manages to successfully recreate the social scene of the English country village in which Emma is set in a modern day high school. Here, people are also bound by circumstance in an environment where personality and class create social problems. The cluelessness of Cher is what makes her so akin to Emma Woodhouse, and the similarities of each version comment on the unchanging aspects of humanity. By looking at a modern day version of Emma, audiences can see the contrasting beliefs of the two tremendously different worlds. While the traits of vanity, deception and self-interest demonstrated in Austen’s characters are mirrored in Heckling’s characters, they also demonstrate personal growth. Heckerling does this to appeal to a larger audience, and to ensure audiences don’t condemn the follies of the characters and feel she is making a harsh indictment on society, since all characters are dealt with sympathetically and light
