Sports have become a big part of kids’ lives. In fact, over 5 million kids participate in sports every year (Gould). Schools fund and support sports annually for the sake of children having fun in what they do. This overall leads to many benefits to the children who are taking part in sports for their school. Student athletes have become very successful in what they do for many reasons. Schools should continue to fund sports because they help kids socialize, they have educational benefits, and they promote exercise and staying healthy. One reason schools should support and continue to fund sports is that they help kids socialize. Socializing is a huge part in general because it helps you create new friends. While sports puts a lot of stress on young kids, studies have shown that sports can actually lead to a more academic success. A multi-year study made in Michigan has shown that “children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to the school and increased occupational aspirations at youth.” In addition to the fact that schools should support school sports, the mission statement of the National Federation of State High School Activity Associations promotes “participation and sportsmanship” to try to “develop good citizens through interscholastic activities which provide equitable opportunities, positive recognition and learning experiences to students while maximizing the achievement of educational goals” (Gould). As one can see, this association is stressing that it is possible to juggle sports activities, while learning important life lessons, like sportsmanship, and to focus on their academics.
