Should the legal drinking age be lowered to 18 from 21? In my opinions, yes. If 18 year olds are allowed to vote, go to war, get married, sign a contract, and more then why can’t they have a beer with friends or while they are at college? There are many reasons that I have for it being lowered like they should be able to drink in controlled environments like restaurants, their house, or at college. Once you turn 18 the world says you are an adult so why can’t you do this one adult thing? Other countries have a lower drinking age and they have taught the kids how to drink responsibly. If they are home they drink so lowering it would make it legal, they drink at college so why not make it legal for them to? This source says that if you do lower the age to 18 it won’t ensure they drink responsibly they just can’t be punished for it (debatewise.org). I found a source that gives 3 reasons for why the legal drinking age should not be lowered to 18. The first reason is drunk driving. According to this source the youth is most responsible for drinking and driving. In 2010 the highest rates of drunk driving were found from the ages of 21 to 25 (23%), and 18 to 20 (15%). This source says that if it was legalized for people under 18 that 15% rate would increase a lot (Nagin). The second reason is binge drinking and alcohol poisoning. They say that if the legal drinking age was lowered to 18 binge drinking would increase. 44% of students who go to college drink alcohol at a binge level or even much greater. This source also says that up to or even more than 30,000 students have to have medical treatment for alcohol poisoning. It also says that from the years of 1999 to 2005 157 students from the age of 18 to 23 drank themselves to death. Once again, they say lowering the age would cause these number to go up
