Getting a driver’s license is one of the most exciting experiences a teenager goes through. The freedom of being able to go wherever one wants is both exciting and liberating. If state legislature passed a bill that made it illegal for teens to obtain a driver’s license before getting a high school diploma, the effects would be detrimental. As a teenage driver myself, I understand firsthand that if I was not able to drive, I would feel like I was being deprived of part of the teenage experience. This is why I believe that restricting a driver’s license to only those with a high school diploma could negatively affect teens by reducing their sense of freedom, prohibiting important driving practice before college, and by complicating the parents …show more content…

There is already multiple car incidents cause by teens each year. If this bill passed, teens would be entering college with less than sufficient driving experience. In turn, this would lead to more serious wrecks on college campuses and would affect the safety of the upperclassman drivers. Most college students would not be able to get their 6th month restrictions off, until the middle of their freshman year. This would lead to more students breaking the law of only have 1 non-family member in the car with a beginning license. It is not uncommon for parents to be both relieved and apprehensive when their child gets behind the wheel. A majority of parents schedules are relaxed a bit, when their children are able to transport themselves to high school functions. After acquiring my license, I asked my parents if they missed driving me around, their answer proved that driving teenagers around can become burdensome. While transporting children can be an enjoyable experience for parents, it can become onerous when those kids become seniors in high school. With the passing of this bill, that is exactly what parents would have to do.
In conclusion, while restricting a driver’s license to only those with a high school diploma is a good idea in theory, there are too many cons that overweigh the pros of the effects it would have on those involved. The lack of freedom, practice, and the negative effects on parents all prove this point. High school students need to have the liberation they often feel deprived of. They also need to have practice driving before they attend college.
