High School Uniforms
Schools today are having a debate on whether school uniforms should become mandatory or have the students have their own free will to wear what they like as long it doesn't mess with the schools regulations and rules. Some of the many issues that occur due to not having a proper dress code are bullying, cost of uniforms/more affordable then branded clothes and how uniforms could change the student's education.
School uniforms should be addressed at schools to help get rid of bullying. Students get bullied for not wearing brand clothing. Just because the students aren't wearing the newest fashion they get bullied for off branded clothes. Students that get bullied are often not able to afford the fashionable clothes the rich kids can. This will also stop peer pressure with other students because they are all wearing the same clothing and the students would feel more of an equal then an outcast. If the uniforms were mandatory by the school would help stop giving students reasons to bully someone based on the clothes they wear or how much money the parents have to spend on the said clothes. Bullying will be solved more with uniforms because in an article of "Great! Students that don't have a dress code to wear uniforms take longer to get ready in the morning to get to school because there is diversity of clothes to choose from which could cause the student to be late. Rather if all students had the same outfits it would take half as long to get ready for class. Nowadays, public school and many districts are discussing the possibilities of enforcing the uniform policy. In most places, many private schools already require students to have their mandatory uniforms; however, there are only a few public schools adopting this mandatory school-uniform polices as one of their enrollment requirements. The reason why not all public schools participated was because people believe that they are violating the freedom of choice when enforcing this mandatory uniform policy; yet problems such as bullying and segregation, emerged in these schools. Some people still think uniforms have no benefits at all. However, all public school students should be required to wear uniforms because it would improve the academic performance, reduce the violent behaviors based on appearance judgment, and provide less stress for both parents and students.
High school is typically a time when kids begin to distinguish themselves from one another. Students begin to develop their own sense of personal style, desperately trying to both fit in and stand out simultaneously. Being self-conscious and often lacking the confidence needed to assert themselves, teens are forced to use clothing and outward appearance as the means to manifest this individuality. Thus, students should not be forced to wear uniforms to school. Standard uniforms are unproven deterrents to student violence; are a "Band-Aid" to cover up the real problems faced by children and teens; and they violate students' right of self-expression, depriving them of their search for identity.
For the past decade, schools, parents and students have clashed over the debate of dress code regulations. Although traditionally preferred by private or religious institutions, the abundant range of benefits that uniforms bestow upon Catholic schools have been observed, and public schools are encouraged to adopt this beneficial policy to improve their establishments and acquire these attributes. Do you remember what your wardrobe was like during high school? Maybe you wore the latest in brand name clothing, anything that wasn’t associated with gang signs, or whatever hand me downs you could get. The reality is physical violence is common between children because of the name brand on a jacket or a pair of jeans. Children are being ridiculed because their families simply can't afford to provide them with the latest in fashion. In our larger cities where gang involvement is prevalent, children are killed because they choose to wear the wrong color to school. This concern is not about civil liberties or freedom of expression, it's about improving the educational environment within our public school systems nationwide. If this is a possible solution to the issues faced in public schools, is expressing one’s self with brand name clothing not worth giving up? and I went to private school where I was required to wear uniforms. I saw a strong correlation between wearing uniforms and prevention of school violence. I’m here today to talk about why uniforms prevent school violence. I will speak about how it prevents students from ridicule, theft and gang violence.
At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
It will prevent bullying and teasing, because putting every student in the same outfit will decrease the opportunity for students to get bullied or picked on. Also, reduce violence and dissipated thefts. A fifth-grade student did not want to go to school because she was bullied. The reason to why she was bullied is that she would repeat an outfit or wear off-brand clothing. Parents complain a lot because of their children begging them for money to buy expensive clothing that they will probably only wear once. Out of 4800 students, 2448 students get bullied for a reason similar to this fifth grader, which leads to some of them committing suicide or dropping out of school. Schools should have an administered school uniform because dressing freely causes social discrimination, wearing a school uniform saves time, and not having a school uniform could be a distraction to some students.
Bill Clinton once said, “People will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside, instead of what they’re wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require students to wear school uniforms.” Public schools across America are searching to improve safety, school belonging and also help parents save money & students save time getting ready. One way to improve these issues would be to implement a uniform policy. The adoption of school uniforms policies will reach what public schools across America are searching for.
School uniforms are a boiling conversation point these days. There are so many well-built points of view about what route parents, students, and superintendents wish to go in. It has been disputed that school uniforms have the potential to make a school safer, that uniforms reduce harassment or self-esteem issues, and that uniforms return the focus to the students' learning. I disagree. I, in fact think that school uniforms do not help make our schools a more secure place, I think that they do not revisit the center of attention to student's education - they just shifted where the attention was previous, and that they won’t help cut down on harassment or self- esteem issues in school.
When I was a child attending elementary school all of my friends loved the way I dressed, but there was also other children that attended school with me that seemed inferior to me simply because of how I dressed. Usually the children that praised the way I dress always wore nice clothes themselves, while the others who didn’t dress ad nice would try to pick fights or make fun of children that did dress nice. Later on in my life as I approached high school the tables turned; the teenagers who dressed nice became the ones who picked on other students in school because of the low quality clothes certain students wore in school, this would result in student violence. My stance on student uniforms is that I believe every public school in the U.S should utilize school uniform policy because it reduces school violence, provides better security, increases performance, and also reduces stress on families.
Having a mandated uniform policy in place assists in easing the burden of school clothing costs by allowing parents to shop for more reasonable prices, because the clothes will look the same regardless of the brand. School bullying can be reduced by not easily being able to determine the more expensive garments versus the less expensive, eliminating the ease with which individuals profile based on income status. Students who regularly bully other students based on clothing choices will be eliminated, improving student behavior. This policy also allows students to concentrate more on their studies than on the next new clothing fad, resulting in more academic progress. Reducing distractions stemmed from students clothing choices enables students to concentrate on what they are in school to do, which is learn. Giving our lesser advantaged students the opportunity to wear administrator mandated uniforms allows these children to feel more included and less segregated from those that are from a more advantageous background. Allowing these students to get to know each other based on actions rather than background and status could result in friendships that are more diverse and sophisticated. Mitchell, UCLA School of Education says, "I think its great news for all of us who have advocated school uniforms as a way of building community.” A pressing issue, bullying has become a big problem in many school, and to eliminate this problem, school policies should require students to wear uniforms. Many people believe that school uniforms build the community into a safer, more positive environment. School uniforms improve school academics, prevent gang violence, and assist families, who can not afford expensive clothing.
A uniform is a standard set of clothes that is worn by a group of people. These people may be members of an organization or a group of people having the same ideas. There are thousands of kinds of uniforms in the world worn by people, such as police officers, firefighters, doctors, lawyers, security guards, and even fast-food restaurant workers. School uniforms are a controversial issue in schools today. Many schools have already adopted a policy mandating school uniforms, while many more are still considering the change. School uniforms create an atmosphere of equality in which the students are able to achieve to their best, while attaining the most out of their education. An article in the Wall Street Journal reports that students are still being ridiculed for wearing the wrong clothes, and in fact, fashion-related bullying appears to be on the rise, according to Dorothy Espelage, a psychology professor at the University of Illinois. This evidence contradicts the opposing team's argument. Additionally, the opposing team claimed that they have never seen bullying based on brands in our school, but this assertion is easily refuted since we wear school uniforms at SIS. Therefore, it is evident that bullying based on clothing, including brands and inexpensive clothing, is still prevalent and increasing in frequency. As bullying is detrimental to a student's well-being, it is crucial to prevent it and promote healthy development by implementing school uniforms globally, particularly in Hong Kong.
There is an unending discussion in schools across the country about school uniforms and whether or not they make for a better experience in school for the students or just the teachers. Those who are pro-uniforms insist that uniforms will allow families to save money and time on clothing. This is so because these days children often get ready by themselves, because their parents are usually off to work before they wake up for school (Linder-Altman). Uniforms give the parents of these children confidence that their child is going to school looking halfway decent.
