College athletes should not be paid
Do you think college athletes should be paid? Many people think college athletes should be paid like professional athletes, while others think they shouldn’t because they are basically already getting paid with scholarships. College Athletes should not be paid to play because they’re basically already getting paid with scholarships, schools might not make as much money as others, players might think the pay is unfair, and if one sports program gets paid, then all the other programs will demand to be paid.
A common argument against this position is that the athletes should be paid. Many of the colleges make hundreds of millions a year from people coming to see the athletes play. This being said many people think the players should each get a portion of that money, because they’re the ones bringing the major crowds in. One article poses the issue with this hypothetical situation. They observe, “If the star on the team is paid more than a second stringer, then that will possibly cause tension between the two. This will lead to missed blocks, missed opportunities, and less chemistry between the overall team. It can also lead to players leaving the team” (Wilson 1). This being said some players might think it is unfair causing tension between them and their team leading to a possible switch in schools or dropping from the sport. When you are on a team, you are expected to show good class and be willing to help your team use temporary setbacks and losses to improve together.
