My experience, Buffalo verses Charlotte
I was born and raised in Buffalo, New York and it’s all I’ve ever known. When I was younger my parents took me on little short trips like, Toronto and Columbus, Ohio. I was young, so I didn’t really remember a lot that was going on or different about the two places. When I got older, I decided I wanted a change in my life but did not know what or where. In September of 2003, I was invited to my cousin’s wedding in Charlotte, North Carolina. I decided to go and when I did, I did not want to return back to Buffalo. Of course, I had to come back to Buffalo because I was only visiting. I had made up in my mind right then, Charlotte, North Carolina was the place for my children and me. I decided to move to Charlotte before Christmas of that year. My experiences were years to remember. I stayed in Charlotte for a total of seven years. During the years I had been living in Charlotte, my most memorable experiences were the weather and the commuting. The month I moved to Charlotte was in November of the same year of the wedding I attended. Usually in November Buffalo the weather is cold and very cool at night. When you are raised in buffalo, December is about snow and Christmas; so to be without snow in Charlotte is a weird feeling. Rain was another crazy adventure. You know the saying, “It’s raining cats and dogs.” Well, it rains just that hard in Charlotte. It’s a kind of rain, I have never seen before. I had to pull over on the highway because I could not see it was raining so hard. It looked like someone was pouring buckets of rain on my windows. In Buffalo, it rains but not hard crazy rain. I have seen people walking in the rain in Buffalo with no problem. You couldn’t walk in the rain in Charlotte, an umbrella does nothing for the rain. Most people who grow up in Cincinnati cant wait to get out, but once they leave they can’t wait to come back because there is no other place like it. It has the small town “homey” feeling everybody grows to love, along with big city options that are easily accessible. Nobody ever wants to come to Cincinnati, but once they do, they realize how special it is, regardless of the territory. Its unique structure comes as surprise, yet, joyous experience and that’s what makes it special. East or West, North or South Who-Dey baby!
A series of cold spells and heavy snowfalls culminated in the first week of January, when a huge snowstorm accompanied by high winds hit the central plains. Drifts of six feet or more were common and the temperature dropped to 30 degrees below zero in some places. Cross was so caught up in thinking about Martha and her letters, he believes that his negligence led to Lavender’s death. The next morning, Cross burned all of Martha’s letters and pictures in the rain. Rain is symbolic to Cross because it’s a sign of rebirth of his transformation from a distracted lover into a true leader. Cross changed his mind set about his job as a leader and is now reborn. I was born 23 years ago in the Dominican Republic, an island located in the Greater Antilles. There is a saying from my country that goes "Mi tiera mi corazon" meaning my country my love, which explain exactly how I felt about the Dominican Republic. To me the Island of Santo Domingo is the greatest in the World; there are beautiful people, gorgeous weather and all the mangoes I could have eaten. Then one day my parents gave me the bad news, they were moving to this place called New York, they told my brother and me that they would send for us later. That was 12 years ago and now here I am living in New York, the greatest city in the world, next to my Santo Domingo. When I was younger New York seemed as big as the world, I often heard my parents talked about how New York had so many jobs, and was the richest place in the world. I could not wait to see how this place was. No one told me that New York had a crime rate higher than the Empire state building, no one told me that certain New Yorkers would hate me because of my color, no one told me how New York eats one of it's children, for every orphan it took in.
“I still remember the day we left like it was yesterday I will never forget pulling away and looking back at my childhood home. I will also never forget that my best childhood friend was not home the day we left so I never got to say goodbye. Many folks go their whole lives without having to move. For them it is easy; they know the same people, have loads of friends, and never have to move away from their families. As with me, I was in a different situation. I grew up my entire life, all eighteen years of it, in a small town called Yorktown, Virginia. In my attempt to reach out for a better life style, my girlfriend and I decided we were going to move to Shreveport, Louisiana. Through this course of action, I realized that not two places in this country are exactly alike. I struggled with things at first, but I found some comforts of home here as well.

However, in The Kite Runner, there is not a lot of rain, and with it being in Afghanistan, it is assumed to be sunny, even when it is not mentioned. However, the weather is specifically mentioned when it snows. Amir speaks of snow and says, “Snow is clean, stark, severe, warm (and insulating blanket, paradoxically), inhospitable, inviting, playful, suffocating, filthy” (Foster 80). Hosseini plays off societies preconceived notions and attitudes towards weather and the tone associated with it in his book. In his naivety, Amir thinks of the snow like most children, with excitement and happiness. It’s “inviting” and playful”, as Foster said before. Amir describes his love for the winter, “I loved wintertime in Kabul. I loved it for the soft pattering of snow against my window at night, for the way fresh snow crunched under my back rubber book” (Hosseini 49). The snow was fresh and clean, just like is conscious at the time. This is when he’s naive, before the rape, before he feels all of the pressure from his father. Later, when he feels the pressure from his father, the snow feels more “suffocating”. “Snow blanketed every rooftop and weighed on the branched of the stunted mulberry trees that lined our streets” (Hosseini 60). I 've never experienced the extremes of New England weather but Boston and Harvard get the same weather as Amherst don 't they, regardless of whether they 're urban or rural? Rain can sometimes have a symbolic meaning. It can be shown as something pure or the washing away of someone's wrong doings. On the other hand snow can be seen as something different. Wether it's cold and inhuman and stark. However it can also be seen as pure.
When a viewer watches a film, they are mostly focused to characters on screen and the plot which tells the story. In most films, the drama unfolding on screen is derived from a combination of these two traits. Setting is sometimes viewed and analyzed when viewing a film as well, but it is very likely that weather on screen is something most viewers easily overlook. This is unfortunate as weather, or in this case, rain, is an important part to the film in its entirety. The inclusion of rain, which incorporates thunder, lighting, and water, in both Rear Window and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, plays an important role to the films not only to the scene in which they are featured in, but to the entire picture as a whole. The dramatic effect of rain creates realism for the characters and setting, as well as acting as a type of pathetic fallacy, mirroring the feelings or emotions of specific characters. The rain compliments the actors on screen on a sensual level, incorporating visuals and sounds.
It was a beautiful, sunny day in South Florida. I was six years old, playing by the pool with my new puppy. I loved swimming in the pool almost every day after school. I also enjoyed going out on our boat after school or crossing the street and going to the beach. My father came home one evening with some interesting news. Now, I do not remember exactly how I felt about the news at that time, but it seemed like I did not mind that much. He had announced that we were going to move back to my birth country, Belgium. I had been living in Florida for five years and it was basically all I had known so I did not know what to expect. I had to live with my mom at first, and then my sister would join us after she graduated high school and my father finished settling things. I remember most of my earlier childhood by watching some old videos of me playing by the pool and dancing in the living room. It seemed like life could not get any better. However, I was excited and impatient to experience a new lifestyle. I realized that I could start a whole new life, make new friends and learn a new language. Belgium was not as sunny as South Florida but it has much better food and family oriented activities. Geographic mobility can have many positive effects on younger children, such as learning new languages, being more outgoing, and more family oriented; therefore, parents should not be afraid to move around and experience new cultures.
The place where I would like to call me second home is located all the way down in Savanna Georgia. I can remember way back about nine years ago in the summer of 2008. The plane ride was a long and hot, and I spent the whole ride playing on my PSP. When I got off the plane I remembered walking through the freezing cold Savanna International Airport seeing all the flags of different countries hanging from the ceiling, but then taking one step out of the airport front doors looking for the car services that was rented and feeling the crushing 100°F heat and deathly humidity. But it is all worth the painful heat to spend time in the beautiful city.
