Short Story Analysis: The Most Dangerous Game
The story of my choosing is The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. The theme of the story is Hunters vs. the hunted in which the roles of hunter and the hunted change throughout the story between characters. The characterization and setting of the story are the elements that brought out the theme. As one of Richard Connell’s most memorable short stories, The Most Dangerous Game provides the example of a perfect short story.
The first element that brings out the theme of hunter vs. the hunted is the characterization. The protagonist, Sanger Rainsford is a well-known, highly experienced big-game hunter whose understanding of civilization and the relationship between hunter and prey is transformed
“You’re a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?”. The story “The Most dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell introduces an adventurous type of thriller with two main characters named Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. Both of which are hunters who in the story play a “game” invented by General Zaroff out of pure fear of becoming bored of the hunt. General Zaroff is a big fan of the hunt and everything he says about the hunt is to be taken serious. Rainsford and General Zaroff are described to be excellent hunters through the traps Rainsford makes, all the big game Zaroff has hunted, but Zaroff is better at hunting through the fact that the hunt has began to bore and he needs more of a challenge hunting humans.
In the short story “The Hunter” the author Richard Stark introduces Parker, the main character of this book. The main character is a rough man, he’s a criminal, a murderer, and even an escaped convict. He’s described as crude and rugged and though women are frightened by him, they want him. Parker is not the classic criminal, but rather he’s intelligent, hard, and cunning. In this story the author carefully appeals to his audience by making a loathsome criminal into a hero, or rather, an anti-hero. The author, Richard Stark uses ethical appeal to make his audience like Parker through the use of phronesis, arête, altruism and lastly the ethos of his audience.
The Only Game, by Mike Lupica, is about a 6th grade boy named Jack that is very good at baseball. When the book starts out Jack and his old team mates are very excited that baseball season is just about to start up again. They all are out on the field explaining how it looks and smells so great. Then the day arrives that they had all been waiting for, tryouts. Jack explains how it is great to be back at it with his best friend Gus. After tryouts they found out who all made the team and it was basically the same team that they had last year. This year was supposed to be the year that they win the Little League World Series. They had all the offence and defense they needed to go all the way. Last year’s team made it to the World series
A skilled hunter sprints desperately through the woods, realizing the futility of hiding from his greatest foe: his own kind. Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is the story of a hunter that becomes the hunted. The story explores the sense of extreme terror the protagonist feels being pursued by a psychopath living on a mysterious island. This protagonist, Rainsford, has many traits that aid him in his battle with the general. By demonstrating his cunning, sly, and remorseful traits, Rainsford shows the story’s theme of “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes”.
Foremost, we need to examine the hunter from his psychological progression from his past. In the story, his views are often overshadowed by the narrater or by our learned emotion to see the story as a picture. He states that he has emotional baggage from a previous relationship (Houston, MLM, 805) and tries to explain how much she hurt him. That would bring any of us to a point of building a sort of emotional wall. From this the narrorater begins to build a sort of case against him with her friends instead of looking and progressing him past that point of rejection from his past girlfriend.
Foreshadowing is a beneficial literary device that may be most salutary once the reader has completed the passage. In the short story,“The Most Dangerous Game”, author Richard Connell uses foreshadowing to expose General Zaroff as a bloodthirsty cannibal to his readers.
Although pride can lead to beneficial outcomes, pride with the absence of empathy can lead to a devastating result. The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell shows that having too much pride and no empathy can get someone in some terrible trouble. The theme is proven by Rainsfords pride and unempathetic-ness, how the general had too much pride, and how the general only saw himself as the hunter, not the hunted.

Whitney introduces the secondary theme, being that hunters usually have no empathy for their prey. This is one of the first uses of irony in the story. Metaphors and Similes are often used in this story, so the reader has a better image of the setting, this is something, and I find Connell did incredibly well, for instance when he refers to the darkness of the night as moist black velvet, the sea was as flat as a plate-glass and it was like trying to see through a blanket. Rainsford begins his epic struggle for survival after falling overboard when he recklessly stood on the guard rail, this is our first example of how Rainsford manages to conquer his panic and think analytically and there by ensuring his survival.

	The poems of Robert Hunter have diverse and variegated themes; most, however relate either to folk stories or the vivid emotions and scenes he creates in order to illustrate his point. Hunter's lyrical themes can be divided into three main categories. First are themes used in a traditional vein, written about classical ideas and told in a folkloric fashion. Second are themes employed in a contemporary tone, about modern concepts and written in a more current style. Last are themes that are either used frequently in both contemporary and traditional ways, or transcend the division of contemporary/traditional and form their own categories.
“I hunt more dangerous game….” Similarities and differences can appear anywhere, especially in the short story and the movie called The Most Dangerous Game. They have similar, yet different expositions, characters, and plots with conflicts. Many people say that books or short stories are better than movies because of the similarities and differences that are found. Books or short stories are usually more descriptive, informative, and do not stray too far from the central idea or main theme, while movies only fall into one or two of these categories. Movies hardly ever fall into all three categories, however if they do the movies become better. This is not the case with The Most Dangerous Game. One place where movies and short stories have major similarities and differences is at the beginning of the story or the exposition.
So who were the hunters? In the story Rainford also says, “luckily you and I are hunters.” When Rainsford states this he is referring to himself and whitney. Also in the story, Zaroff, another main character is also a hunter, on page 220 he says,”I have a passion in my life, Mr Rainsford, and it's the hunt.”
[5) A rich, vivid description of the setting] One major use of symbolism within the short story is Kaplan’s use of the forest where the characters are hunting to represent the male domain. The author shows that women are expected to stay home and look after the house and care for the family while the men provide for it. Andy’s mother even packed the hunting party a meal for their trip and as expected, Andy is the one who cleans up after the meal.
Rainsford remarks, “The world is made up of two classes-- the hunters and the huntees,” (1). Where Zaroff believes, “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the the strong, and, if needs be, taken by the strong,” (9). Zaroff hunts humans because, “Hunting had ceased to be what you call ‘a sporting proposition,’ (7) . He seeks and creates a new challenge by hunting innocent sailors. The men’s ideology is central to the story because Zaroff turns on Rainsford and makes him the hunted. Their fight to the death begins as soon as Rainsford demands to be taken off of Ship-Trap Island. Zaroff becomes disappointed in Rainsford not wishing to engage in hunting humans. He no longer considers Rainsford a strong hunter, but rather one of the weak of the world. Rainsford and Zaroff both have extensive hunting knowledge due to their travels around the world. Since both of the men have equal hunting knowledge they attempt to outsmart each other during the deadly game. For example, Rainsford creates a long and complex trail that would hopefully confuse
