Many critics became hung up on the appearances of the actors and actresses themselves instead of their performances. Reviewer, Rob Hedelt, claims the cast looks “like they just walked out of ‘Abercrombie and Fitch’” (Hedelt). Genzlinger stated “everyone in this fantasy is good-looking in that bland, Disney way” (Genzlinger). In “’The Shannara Chronicles’: TV Review,” Keith Uhlich compares the actors and actresses to Barbie and Ken dolls, believing their looks were what got them hired (Uhlich). Uhlich singles out actor, Austin Butler’s, appearance of “beestung lips and Fabio Jr. blond mane [that] seems more suited to strutting on a Paris catwalk than wielding a broadsword” (Uhlich). As for the young cast’s acting, Uhlich calls everyone out on having “blandly pretty faces who give continuously stilted line readings” (Uhlich). However, actors that have been in the business longer such as James Remar and John Rhys-Davies are praised for delivering splendid performances (Uhlich). Most notable is Allison Keene’s review that The Shannara Chronicles is “extremely racially and sexually diverse” (Keene). In addition, “Shannara is in keeping with the modern trend of putting young women on an equal playing field in genre stories” (Zeitchik). Garry McConnachie believes the characters to be interesting and highlights Drayton’s performance of moving from a stiff opening on the show to a beacon of hope (McConnachie). Austin Butler is also noted as progressing in his role as a lead character in The Shannara Chronicles
