The Oedipus complex, which name is linked to the Greek play Oedipus Rex tells a story of a man who unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother. “Every new arrival on this planet is faced with the task of mastering the Oedipus complex.” (Freud cited in Laplanche & Pontalis, 2006, p. 283). Young children at the Oedipal stage may want to possess their mothers, although at that time it may not be sexual.
