The crisis I will be analyzing regarding individuals of sexual assault and crisis of lethality is, elders affected by rape and the high rate of suicide in the elderly community.
Sexual Assault
Elder sexual abuse is defined as an action against an elder that is unwanted and sexual in origin. It usually involves those older than 60 years of age. (Traxler, (2017). An elder of sexual violence often experiences severe emotional and physical trauma. Studies report that elder sexual abuse victims tend to be of advanced age, frail, and dependent on others for care. The effect of sexual assault can be a factor for an elderly person to commit suicide, and mainly because of the contribution of PTSD. In each crisis, the elderly depends on someone for care and that could be in a home or nursing facility. They are isolation from families and friends, they feel fear, shame and guilt about their situation and has depression in common. Most of the time the perpetrator are the caregivers of elder sexual abuse and suicide is mainly by the elder themselves. Suicide is also easier to track and therefore, a statistic can be done in that area. However sexual assault is rarely reported, so an accurate statistic is harder to pinpoint. Elders of suicide factors also differ, by the effect of losses of a spouse, mental illness, friends, work roles, and income. On the other hand, sexual assault factors differ in the victims deal with assault, for example, fear and shame after the assault and fear of reprisal.
The differences in the way family often don’t recognize elder in each crisis is, because elder rape is view as unlikely to happen and family of elders who commit suicide neglects their parent(s) because children want to live their own life or parents have no need for them.

Sociological Analysis of Sexual Assault This essay will examine the social and cultural conditions, within the macro-diachronic and micro-synchronic theoretical models, that intensify or perpetuate sexual assault. I have chosen only one concept from each model because these are the only concepts that I feel that I can use to most accurately and comprehensively depict causes and reasons for why sexual assault is deeply entrenched in our social structure. I will thus explore, from these ideological viewpoints, some of the motivations and circumstances that lead offenders to sexual assault. I will also fuse some of the historical attitudes from which today's concepts have evolved into our contemporary understanding of these social phenomena. However, it’s important that we look beyond both offenders' motivations and history, and to the greater sociological view, if we are to correctly reconstruct acts of violence such as sexual assault.
As we grow older our susceptibility to a traumatic incident increases dramatically (Chan, Moran, Clarke, Martin, & Solomon, 2009). Elderly patients require far more resources medically than younger patients with the same mechanism of injury (Dinh, Roncal, Byrne, & Petchell, 2013), and it is likely due to the deterioration of the body’s systems that come with age. As seen in Fig 1 the two major causes of death for both sexes from age 65 – 84 are road traffic collisions (RTC) or falls.

The selection of whether an abused older adult should enter an adult protection agency or a domestic violence program is often dependent on her age and whether or not the abuser is of relation or known to the victim (Kilbane & Spira, 2010). The concept of being known to the perpetrator is similar to US law regarding sexual abuse of a child, whereas, according to Fong and Cardoso (2010) child sexual abuse comes in many forms; however, some forms of child sexual abuse does not qualify a child victim for services provided by the child protection agency. To reap the benefits of the child protective agency, “…the perpetrator of sexual abuse needs to be responsible for the care and custody of the child” (pp. 313). One can argue that there is a moral failure of the legislative body to pass laws that does not provide the needed protections for older woman against perpetrators. Rape until 2012 was defined as “The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will.” It was severely lacking was only updated by the Federal Bureau of Instigation in 2012. It left out an entire section of rape that can be committed which is man being the rape victim. This lead to misclassification of rape of males for years. So even the statistics used till 2014 were underwhelming and inaccurate when it was related to male rape or sexual assault. Rape in the United States is now defined by the Department of Justice as “Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.” Male Rape or men being the sexual assault victims are rarely ever the subject of a dialogue when Sexual Assault is the topic being discussed because rape is generally seen as a heterosexual highly sexed male attack on vulnerable, attractively dressed female victim. Most rapists have alternative outlets for sexual gratification, many take little notice of their victim 's physical attributes, and some may experience sexual dysfunction during the assault.
According to Missouri's Department of Health and Senior Services, there are three things that elder abuse can be classified as. It can be classified as abuse, neglect, or likelihood of serious physical harm. While all of these classifications sounds quite similar, there are some subtle differences. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services defines abuse as " the infliction of physical, sexual, or emotional injury or harm including financial exploitation by any person, firm, or corporation" ("Protective Services For Adults," n.d., para. 4). Elder neglect is "the failure to provide services to an eligible adult by any person, firm, or corporation with a legal or contractual duty to do so, when such failure presents either an imminent danger to the health, safety, or welfare of the client or a substantial probability that death or serious physical harm would result"("Protective Services For Adults," n.d., para. 4). Abuse, neglect, as well as likelihood of serious physical harm are all reportable by law. ("Protective Services For Adults," n.d).

She mentions how the victims choose to keep quiet about the incident, since they fear their attacker will harm them for reporting the incident. Adefolalu mentions, "Victims who feared reprisal attacks from perpetrators were five times more likely to delay presentation than those who were not. " My hypothesis is fear of their assault prevents an individual from reporting a sexual assault committed towards them. My null hypothesis is fear does not affect if an individual reports a sexual assault. My independent variable is fear of assault and my dependent variable is unreported sexual assault.
Mental health outreach programs may help to prevent elderly suicide. Benefits have been suggested for community-based mental health education, screening, and outreach, as well as for telephone outreach and support initiatives. The clinical profile of depressed elderly suicide victims suggests that, if treated for depression, chances are they are less likely to attempt let alone commit suicide. Elderly suicide is serious social problem that seems to elude the media, health professional, policymakers and society. The increase in the number of adults entering the age category of 65 and over is going to increase in few years because of this and what we know about elderly suicide, the rate of suicide among the elderly is projected to increase.
Social isolation has to do with when older people retire, thus cutting off an important source of social activity. Declining health also increases isolation by making it hard to get around. Death of friends, neighbors, family members, and spouses also contribute to this issue and consequently make a new one, a higher risk of death. Months after a spouse dies, the partner is at a higher risk of death due to depression henceforth leading to suicide. Retirement is a big part of aging which many younger people do not think about. As a result of a fluctuating economy, many people are very cautious about giving up working and staging or maybe even not retiring. Elderly abuse is defined as a range of behavior that includes passive neglect, active emotional and verbal mistreatment, and even life-threating physical violence. For example unfairly taking some other property or wrongfully taking an older person’s money, but most of these cases go undetected because many are afraid to speak out.
