In the book Insurgent by Veronica Roth, setting is one of the most important and influential aspects of the story. The setting of a book or story is one of the most important things to the reader as it allows them to imagine the environment surrounding the characters. It creates a tone and an attitude which change the way the reader feels as they continue further into the writing. Roth is able to use the setting of Insurgent as a parallel to the book’s plot and her character’s emotions which helps the reader relate to them. The setting foreshadows most of the plot and helps to develop the characters/factions through small amounts of symbolism.
One of the most important details of the setting for any story is the amount of lighting within the scene. In many works of literature light is a symbol for hope, a symbol of happiness and salvation to anything that it touches. Insurgent goes past the cliché heavenly glow of light and shows a world where light is blinding and hides truth. There are several points in the story where excess and unnecessary amount of light will shine while a character is deceived or mislead by another. Early in the book the main character, Beatrice “Tris” Prior, is drugged by the Amity faction to calm her down. She is given a “peace serum” which alters brain function and rids the user of anger. Beatrice notes, “The room is so bright I have to squint to see.” (Roth, 57) From the beginning of the book, light is the symbol of deception and evil for all who are enveloped in it.
As the counterpart of light, darkness is commonly viewed as an evil and dangerous entity which consumes all and leaves nothing. However, Insurgent ignores the old and cliché use of darkness and makes it the symbol of truth and all that wh...

...erpiece of a story filled with relatable characters who make you feel like you grow with them. Insurgent is filled with an abundance of small details that some may not notice with their first read through the book. These small details are what allow the setting to help develop the characters and plot without being perceptible. In her own creative and effective way Roth manages to use colors to show personalities, lighting to symbolize morality and the environment portrays the emotions of those whom it surrounds. Every single description and all the small unnoticed details about the setting are what allow Roth to foreshadow the plot and develop the characters/factions throughout the book without the reader every noticing.

Many books contain multiple meanings behind them, and have underlying themes to them. The book All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, is no exception. The plot of the book revolves around a young German soldier by the name of Paul Bäumer. Paul is in the war with his friends that he had gone to school with before war along with other comrades he meets in boot camp. In the book All Quiet on the Western Front there are four main themes which are expressed by Remarque which include: Loyalty and friendship under fire, unbelievable suffering at the hands of other human beings, betrayal by adults, and the beauty of nature in stark contrast to the psychotic experiences of war. In the book there are four different examples which clearly explain how these themes clearly represent the book. All together the themes show the tragedy that war really brings upon people in the least way deserve it.
...ainting symbolize the need for patriotism and unity in a country during war on and off the battlefront. These two prominent texts support each other’s points of fighting for human’s unalienable rights and liberties through writing and visualization. The connection between the to conclude that war may not be just but it is the act of physical force or even any action that can bring together a country and achieve the liberties they deserve. This is a message that can apply to any human today, when someone infringes on another’s liberties then they need to stand up and fight back in order to stop the other from doing it again.
It can be argued that the theme of light VS darkness is used to good
...ome aspect of war, from battling with enemies to how battle spiritually destroys young men. The one positive point of this novel is how friends cared for one another when going through tragedies and stressful experiences. It also portrays how strong a soldier needs to be, in order for them to be in the war.
The Divergent series by Veronica Roth centralizes on a society with faction, separating every person by their personality. There are 5 factions, Erudite which is based on intelligence, Abnegation which values the need of others above the needs of oneself, Candor which value honesty, Factionless which are the people who don’t fit in anywhere, and there’s Dauntless, who are considered the strongest soldiers of all the factions. These factions represent the city of Chicago, since Chicago is the only state that survived a war and the people there are the only people who have survived the war nobody knows anything outside of Chicago they have been locked in there for years. There is also a faction that doesn’t quit exist, people feel threatened
Setting is a place or a certain location where an event is about to take place. It is used to create a vivid image for the reader and to better understand the characters and the certain situations the characters face in a story. Furthermore, the setting also gives further insight about a character’s thoughts, feelings, and reactions to what is happening around them. By learning about the setting in a story, the reader will be able to understand how the setting relates back to the character and to the story itself. In Amy Tan’s short story “A Pair of Tickets” setting is used to emphasize the discovery of self-identity as well as heritage and culture for the protagonist Jing-mei.
Dwight Lyman Moody once uttered the words, "Character is what you are in the dark." One interpretation of this quote's meaning is that your true self is revealed during difficult times. I believe that Lyman Moody's words are entirely true, both in literature and in life. In the novel Insurgent by Veronica Roth, Tris' true values are revealed during hard times when she stands up for what she believes in, protects her fellow citizens, and distances herself from those who could be dangerous to her.
These acts and examples show that Inman is developing back to his former self from before the war where life had meaning. Inman is on a spiritual journey rather than a mere physical journey back home. Inman’s journey is a deep part of the novel, and it is a key ingredient to the storyline. All of the examples in this paper point to the underlying conclusion that Inman is ultimately trying to redeem himself and fill in the empty beliefs that the war erased from his body.
Throughout its entirety, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness utilizes many contrasts and paradoxes in an attempt to teach readers about the complexities of both human nature and the world. Some are more easily distinguishable, such as the comparison between civilized and uncivilized people, and some are more difficult to identify, like the usage of vagueness and clarity to contrast each other. One of the most prominent inversions contradicts the typical views of light and dark. While typically light is imagined to expose the truth and darkness to conceal it, Conrad creates a paradox in which darkness displays the truth and light blinds us from it.

As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceived notion about the indoctrination, "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and perplexed. The story is not about heroism but about toil and futility and the divide between the idea of war and the real life and its values. The selected passages are full of violence and death and loss and a kind of perpetual suffering and terror that most of us have never and hopefully will never experience. Both authors ability to place the reader right there on the front line with the main character so vividly, not just in terms of what he physically experienced and witnessed All the complicated, intense and often completely numbed emotions that came along...
The setting or settings in a novel are often an important element in the work. Many novels use contrasting places such as cities or towns, to represent opposing forces or ideas that are central to the meaning of the work. In Thomas Hardy's novel, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, the contrasting settings of Talbothays Dairy and Flintcomb-Ash represent the opposing forces of good and evil in Tess' life.
The setting is important to the overall novel studied because it helps highlight major themes in the novel, it further characterizes the motivations of the characters, and helps explain the overall message of the novel. In 1984 by George Orwell, the overall setting of the novel is in London, which is called Airship 1 in Oceania.
Sometimes, choices may have a greater effect than one might have initially thought it would. In Insurgent, by Veronica Roth, the main character, Tris, is forced to make many tough decisions that could potentially decide the fate of her entire city. She has to decide which of her boyfriend, Tobias’s, parents to support. Tris' final decision of who to support and how it impacts the city illustrates two of Roth's themes—how small choices can have a large-scale effect and division of community—and how they relate to the central conflict.
As the world turns, darkness spreads throughout the lands affecting us all with its cold grasp. Poverty, drought, plague, famine, recession, all of times problems funneling down to a worsening reality. Millions of children dying in the streets and millions without food on their table, it is clear we’re on a downward spiral. As the great godchild of humanity, the United States fights on every front the corrupting forces of evil, acting as a global police for the greater good. A shining pillar of light, breaking through the darkness, stands as the only barrier between the hordes of evil. Sadly the light is dimming; the U.S. is slowly succumbing to the ever powerful Acherontic hordes. We need help, all of us, for soon, even our great nation will fall.
