Emerson is One of Us Self-reliance refers to more than being independent in life such as paying bills and living on your own, but as well as independent to the way the world and humankind rely on the self to exist. In other words self-reliance has two meanings; both a spiritual value and an economic value. Ralph Waldo Emerson, a transcendentalist, who seems to have the same way of thinking as today’s millennials, would approve of Jean Twenge’s label of “Generation Me”. One of the thoughts of a transcendentalist is that the self is the absolute center of reality. Emerson was in fact a strong believer in this. Self-esteem programs are an outside source attempting to positively improve the inside of oneself. They boost one’s confidence and ability to think good thoughts about oneself. Emerson strongly believed that what is outside teaches us to understand and make use of what is inside. As Twenge says on self-esteem programs in her article “Self-esteem is an outcome” (Twenge 502). Emerson would say to this a self-esteem program would be used to positively teach self-improvement and self-realization. The outcome of a program like this would be self-esteem or positive confidence in one’s own worth or abilities. Your title alone gives a most wondrous insight to the essay. It is able to hint at how humankind acts and how a whole generation is portrayed. Unlike you, I think this present generation has finally been able to accomplish the goal of self-reliance. Instead of having a negative focus, like you seem to have chosen, I would like to point out the positivity. Like you say “Generation Me has no need to reincarnate ourselves; we were born into a world that already celebrated the individual.” I say no man can violate his nature. Man may be affected by his own surroundings, but he makes his own decisions. These self-esteem programs are helpful. Society should let a man know his worth, and keep things under his feet. If he does not have that self-focus, self-realization, how is he to accomplish the state of self-reliance? It is help and the goal of this education type is to show that he can be relied upon by himself. Therefore, this generation is not narcissistic, but rather self-reliant. Self-esteem then does not lead to narcissism, but self-reliance. Self-reliance should be an ultimate goal all strive to achieve because without it, man is not able to fend for
