According to google the definition of self-management is “the management of or by oneself; the taking of responsibility for one’s own behavior and well-being”. A simple and straightforward definition. After reading “Emotional Intelligence for Project Managers” by Anthony Mersino, it allowed me to get a deeper, more in-depth and true meaning to what Self-management is. So, exactly what do I now understand about self-management? Self- management isn’t just simply managing your emotions and behavior. It’s about managing, understanding, knowing, and controlling one’s emotions, behavior and self. Why is it so important to manage our emotions? Managing our emotions is the key to managing ourselves and living a better and happier life. Especially …show more content…
We use self-control when we eat an apple instead of Krispy Kreme donut, when we forgive instead of freaking out and when we pay attention instead of paying someone short shrift. self-control can prevent us from engaging in motivated behaviors. Self-control is a life skill that we all need to define, practice, use, and internalize. Self-control can help people feel good about themselves. It is up to us to use self-control. Self-control is an important part of our daily lives. Mesino gives a list of outcomes due to lack of self-control: Angry tiradres, door slamming, e-mail letter bomb, withdrawal, and isolation, holding grudges and getting even, criticsing, sarcasm, and inappropriate humor, and playing the victim. The one that stuck out to me the most where sarcasm and innaporpiate humor, door slamming, withdrawal and isolation, holding grudges. This is the only part of the book where I have to disagree to classify it as a way of “lacking self-control”. I for one seen and experience that type of behavior but I think everyone gets mad at some point, it's not always the best option to keep all that anger built up but if slamming a door, make a sarcastic joke, or just being alone for few helps someone cope with that anger that it is better than using verbal …show more content…
The way we think can affect the way we are feeling based on our thoughts. It is through distorted thinking that we set ourselves up for emotional breakdowns. I can recall plenty of times where I have thinked myself into a terrible mood which have left me vulnerable to an emotional breakdown.I have used the “ always and never” stinking thinking plenty of times. Saying “ I never have time to relax” or “I always have things to do “. I know see I use the words very often. When I use the terms “always” and “never” I don’t mean to “ choose to be the vicitime to circumstances and viewing life as beyond my control” says Mersino, I mean to emphasis my emotions. A way I can avoid using these words is be alert to the use of the words “always” and “never.” Rarely is it true that things are always or never a certain way. Instead of using always or never, I can look for and acknowledge the exceptions and replace the words with “sometimes” “rarely”. Mersino states it as “focusing only on the disagreeable things that happen. If we dwell on the negative, that becomes our reality”. The word negative itself gives me jitters, because I never find myself to be a negative person . The media constantly bombards the mind with a lot of information about disasters, catastrophes, wars and other unhappy events. This information sinks into the subconscious mind, and then, manifests as your habitual manner of thinking. Watch and hear the news, because you
In my own words, I believe that self-control is a deliberate attempt to change the way one thinks and acts about something. For instance, during the month of March, I am on a restricted diet to try to find food triggers to my daily migraines. When I first started, I had to remind myself constantly that at breakfast I wasn’t going to grab a glass of milk, or at lunch, that I wasn’t going to make myself a sandwich. I didn’t realize how hard this was going to be when I first started. There are still times, 15 days after starting, that I am reminded by my mom or dad that I can’t eat certain foods or that I have to pack my own dinner because where we go for dinner won’t have food that I can eat. Every day, I am retraining my mind at how I look at food. I am having to constantly shift my mind away from the long list of food I can’t eat and focus on food that I can. The way that I shift my thoughts of food, is similar to how Erica in Brooks’ book had to shift her thoughts to focus on her tennis match going on. It is a constant rewiring of how the brain looks at the world around us. This process is not easy, and takes a lot of work and time. However, as time progresses, it does get easier. Growing up, I missed a several years of my childhood due to tragedies that occurred. Going through the aftermath of some of the hardships I was facing, I developed an isolated mindset. I thought that if I didn’t get close to people, than I couldn’t get hurt by them as well.
Self-control has two parts, the part that is controlling and the one that is not. However, there are three parts of a soul according to Plato- the rational part, which is what reason tells us we should do, the appetitive part, which is what we want to do, and the spirited part, which is strong, tough and tenacious. When the spirited part of our soul is activated and fighting for justice, it just keeps going. However, we tend to have conflicts within ourselves and within these parts. The appetitive part is the biggest part because people tend to feed their appetites, becoming a slave to their desires. Because of this, reason becomes a slave to the appetites. Reason, however, according to Plato is the best part of people if they learn to not let the other parts of the soul meddle; otherwise reason becomes weaker and weaker. If we do the right thing, which is also the just thing, we will feed the best part of us. However, if you do the unjust thing, you feed your appetite or desires. For example, a drug addict becomes addicted to drugs because he continuously feeds the appetitive part of his soul. His reason diminishes and his spirited part is not longer, the appetitive part takes over completely. By doing this, you are sending your life into chaos and can never have your life harmonious because you will always want more. An
The article defines Self-Efficacy (SE) as a person belief in his/her ability to perform a particular behavior successfully. Researcher suggests mothers’ self-efficacy (MSE) can be directly linked to the increase or decline of a child language development (Albarran & Reich, 2013). This theory is explored by observing 2 factors, perceived barriers and parents’ knowledge and exposure to reading material concerning child development. There are 3 barrier discussed in these article’s. Parent centered barrier looks at the particular situation that would prevent or in decrease a parent from interacting with a child i.e. being too tire, having to work, or just being too busy. Child –centered barriers focus on the child lack of interest in any particular task i.e. being fussy, tired or just not being interested. The last barrier is structural; this particular barrier looks at environment factor that should possible effect (MSE) i.e. nosy back ground, and little exposure to reading material (Lin, Reich, Kataoka, & Farkas, 2015).
“When you don’t manage your life well, you become angry and frustated as things dont go inteded, and our bad mood is a sign showing we were not able to resolve the conflict” (Bucay). One of the hardest things in life is to control yourself from your bad habits. Everyone has a flaw but the only thing that matters is how you deal with it. Tthe play Oedipus the King clearly demonstrates on if you do not control your doings, things will happen even if you wish they had not. People have control of their entire life until they do before they think.
Erik Erikson composed a theory of psychological development that was composed of eight stages. Erikson’s theory focuses on how personalities evolve throughout life as a result of the interaction between biologically based maturation and the demands of society. According to Erikson, “Each stage of human development presents its characteristic crises. Coping well with each crisis makes an individual better prepared to cope with the next.” (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2013, p. 314) According to Erikson’s eight stages of development, I have only been through six of the eight stages.
Self-Analysis Essay In this semester, I learned a lot of writing skill in ENGL 1010. I had no confidence in writing since I was child. However, as I was practicing a lot of writing while listening to this class this semester, I seem to have gained confidence in writing. There are many problems with my writing.
Insufficient Self-Control: The inability to tolerate any frustration in reaching your goals, as well as an inability to restrain expression of your impulses or feelings. When lack of self-control is extreme, addictive behaviour (substance abuse, eating disorders, gambling) may develop.
In the essay, self- control is “. . . the regulation of attention, emotion, and behavior when enduringly valued goals conflict with more immediately pleasurable temptations.’ The most serious problem with focusing so much on tenacity is becoming oblivious and not making use of resources available. Becoming oblivious prevents us from looking at the whole picture instead of just a section. Not making use of the resources is a serious problem because people are not taking what is being offered. The focus on tenacity affects the distribution of resources in the schools across the state by creating more resources and making them
I can even change my ingrained negative thought patterns to be more positive ones by using more positive affirmations every day. Talking to someone about my thoughts, or even just writing them down in a journal or diary can also keep my mind free from so much negative and open to more positive to flow through. It is better to let go of the feelings or thoughts then to let them get bottled up and possibly cause me an overload or panic attack. I need to process them, and figure out why I
Firstly, self-awareness is referring to a person who have a clear cognizance of their personality, including thoughts, motivation, beliefs, weaknesses, strengths and emotions, further this skill allows people to make a better decision (Path way of happiness, 2016). In addition, the executive function helps to manage emotion and helps one’s paying
The development of the human brain is largely based on relationships acquired during the first few months of life. Traits that a child is born with differ from the ones that he or she gains from an outside environment. The types of things that effects the acquirement of these traits is the environment that the guardian provide, and the interaction between baby and guardian in that environment.
Well I guess I’ll start off this paper by being outright honest. I have never done this type of self-assessment exercise. So I’ll start this paper off with what exactly this type of self-assessment is. These types of self-assessments are meant to help show the individual (me) where my strengths lie and also where my weaknesses are as well so that I may try and lean on my strengths while improving on my own shortcomings. Essentially the Johari Window four regions model that we learned about is a great tool for this assessment. The first region is also known as the open area, which essentially means that this is what is known by the person about him/herself and is also know by others. The second region is known as the blind area in which this is information unknown by the individual but is known by others. Which could be behaviors that an individual does but does not realize that they are doing them. The third window is known as the hidden area. This area is essentially information that only you know about yourself and others do not. The fourth area is known as the unknown area. It’s known as that because this is information that you and others do not know about you. It’s when you take a look at these four areas and see your strengths and/or weaknesses are at and if you allow yourself to become open to feedback you then can improve on your own shortcomings and become a better leader.
Personal Effectiveness is using all of our potential resources in order to achieve both work and life goals. It is when we use all our personal resources at our disposal-talent, skills, time in order to get what we want in life. In everyday life we put so much effort to get what we want to achieve in life. We spend a large amount of our time and energy. In this world many people are working towards achieving the same goal with different costs. This is because everyone has different personal effectiveness.
Performance management is a process that guarantees an organisation and all of its available resources are working collectively and effectively towards achieving the organisation’s mission or goal.
