Introduction
In the following assignment I will be looking at the best way to establish a tactical search and rescue team. The goal of SAR is to locate, stabilize and extract people in distress. This can be a hiker on the side of a mountain, sailor lost at sea, trapped urban disaster survivor or an Alzheimer's patient wandering city streets. Each area of SAR employs techniques specific to the circumstance.
To help you understand search and rescue better you should understand and know the following terminology and definitions. The terminology and definitions is only fraction of what is being used but it is the most important. (howstuffworks.com, 2014)
Terminology and Definitions
EOC – Emergency Operations Centre, the EOC is responsible for making all of the operational decisions but they don’t interfere with tactical decisions.
EOP – Emergency Operations Plan
Rescue - extracting victims from an area that poses danger to them
Technical - ensuring the safety of the rescuers with the help of structural specialists
Medical - providing medical assistance to injured victims and rescuers
SASAR – South African Search and Rescue Organization, the SASAR was established by the South African Maritime and Aeronautical Search and Rescue Act, 2002. SASAR is responsible for the coordination of maritime and aeronautical search and rescue operations in South Africa. (TRANSPORT, 2010)
DART – Disaster Assistance Response Team, this is a team that can be rapidly deployed to a disaster area to provide support for up to 40 days.
USAR – Urban Search and Rescue is used in
WSAR – Wilderness Search and Rescue, to coordinate, manage and execute search and rescue missions (Wilderness Search and Rescue, 2013)
