Ana-Mauríne Lara’s Erzulie’s Skirt positions the female body as the scene where lives are interconnected across history and as a dissertation of the human condition. Her protagonists, Micaela and Miriam, tell a story of love, struggle, and survival that echoes the historical significance of slavery and the Caribbean middle passage across time and space. Divided into several sections based on time and location, one particular period in Lara’s novel connects Micaela and Miriam’s experiences most closely with slavery as a whole. After a voyage across the Mona Strait as an attempt to escape from the conditions in the Dominican Republic, they find themselves captured, trapped in a brothel, and forced into prostitution. Many parallels can be drawn to interpret Lara’s use of the brothel as a metaphor for the slave ships used to travel across the original Middle Passage, including the comparable use of people as commodities, the specific imagery and language Lara uses, the historical narrative presented at the beginning of each section, and the larger themes in which identities were simultaneously stripped by oppression and also preserved within the context of community and spirituality.

On March 25, 1947, the Centralia no. 5 mine in Illinois exploded, claiming 111 lives (Martin, 31, 42). The apparent cause was determined to be inadequate mine maintenance by the operator—coal dust had built up on the floor and walls of the mine, creating conditions conducive to a chain reaction of explosions that would kill most of the workers inside of the mine. However, this was not the root cause of the disaster; it was the outcome of a systemic failure within the state government of Illinois. Despite the continuous warnings of a state mining inspector and a chain of notice letters sent from the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals notifying the mine operator—the Centralia Coal Company—of the dangerous conditions in its mine, the disaster was not averted. The disaster occurred because both the mine operator and the Department itself dismissed the inspector’s warnings. The real, indispensable culprit of the disaster at Centralia no. 5 was political interference within the Department and the failure to conduct independent oversight over it. Standing at approximately 1,128feet tall, the sleek design of the John Hancock Center has been a tourist attraction, work space, and home for many since 1965 when the Hancock center first opened its doors. The Hancock has been shaped by the city and the residents of Chicago. This Chicago landmark encompasses the success of Chicago. The very elegant black steel frame and shear mass demonstrates the economic powerhouse that it is. It represents the diversity in Chicago because the Hancock center is home to many different people and companies that wholesomely work in this building. When visiting Chicago one must venture over the to the Hancock Center observatory. This part of the building demonstrates how tourisms effects Chicago tremendously
As the Office Manager at Teamsters Local No 324, my role was to ensure that new members returned their applications for membership within 30 days of employment in order for them to continue working. Their applications contained all their personal information including social security numbers and date of birth. The same information for their spouse and additional designated beneficiaries was also included on their application for their life insurance policy. I was accountable to make sure this information was kept confidential and filed appropriately. I also did all the paperwork for any life insurance payouts. The Crips, as we learned in module 3 are one of the most notorious black or predominately African American gang founded in Southern Los Angeles, California in 1969. This gang was co-found by 16-year-old Raymond Washington and Stanley Tookie Williams III. Even before the Crips however, there was a gang known as the Hoover Groovers. The Hoover Groovers would later form an alliance with the Crips and change their name to Hoover Crips.

The .243 Winchester (6×52mm) is a popular sporting rifle cartridge.
