The book starts with the narrator, Scout talking about how her older brother, Jem broke his arm. Jem did not care, “so long he could pass or punt” (1). Jem and Scout both got into an argument on who caused his accident. They ask their father, who said that they were both right. Scout begins to recall her family history, starting with how Simon Finch decided to settle in Alabama to escape religious persecution. Simon practiced medicine and he was rich, so he bought some slaves and built and built a homestead near the Alabama River. This portrays that the Finch Family had a great deal of money early on. This homestead, called Finch’s Landing was passed on through the generations and could sustain itself. Scout then moves on to talk about her
