Outside of school kids don’t get enough proper nutrition. Everyday in the United States there are approximately 12 million children who receive a free or reduced price lunch because their families may need government help. Besides the fact that many students rely on school lunches for their daily meals, the healthier school food that schools provide is a benefit for the children because it can prevent childhood obesity as well as improve the child's academic performance. There are many kids who rely on school lunches to provide them not only enough food but healthy and nutritious foods for their health. School lunches have created a chronic problem in a school setting, and since it hasn't been fixed, 6-11 year olds have had a 17% increased chance of becoming obese (Centers for Disease control and Prevention). Most school districts don't even bother changing the food restrictions just so they can please their students. Unhealthy school lunches are a huge problem among children in the United States, it can cause obesity, stress, and many other problems.
“More than a third of the county's children are overweight or obese.”(Gustin, 1). As shocking as this is, it's true. One of the big reasons that children and teens are overweight is because of the foods that they eat. They are fed these fattening and unhealthy foods by the school system. Their futures can be changed if we change our choices. Having more nutritious lunches can have a positive impact on the health of American teens.
In my opinion I think that school lunches are not healthy at all. I think that home lunches are way more healthier than school lunches are. I think this because what if your kid has a allergy and the school would not let your kid have something else so you need to pack their lunch for them. And the lunches are to expensive too pay every day and if you have two kids you have to pay twice as much money. Sometimes kids think that school lunches taste really bad and do not like it.

This program, however, decreased schools’ lunch budgets, and schools had a hard time keeping up with the amount of free meals they had to provide, so they came up with some extra ways to increase revenue. However, in a small town in Massachusetts, one chef makes a difference in the health of the school lunch students eat each day, and proves that hiring a trained chef to cook real, healthy meals can increase profit. Unfortunately, that is not the case in most schools across the nation. Unfortunately, the school lunch program ends up wasting a lot of that money. Although the United States spends billions of dollars on school lunches, a lot of the money goes to waste, and lunch at school is not liked by students which makes them go to class with an empty stomach.
Many people wants to know how come we bring our own lunch to school. The school lunch isn't good to start off plus it doesn't even fill you up. Low income children with inadequate access to healthy foods in schools experience higher rates of poor behavior, health problems and academic struggles. As of September 2015, 50.1 million students were attending public elementary and secondary schools in the United States (Back to school statistics, 2015). School aged children spend between 6-8 hours a day, 5 days a week and 180 days in school during the calendar year which results in 35% of their daily calories being consumed during school hours (Edwalds, 2014). Food insufficiency has significant implications for children, including poor physical and mental health outcomes, behavior problems, and low educational achievements. In 2012, 20% of households in the United States with children lacked consistent access to adequate food (Jin, Barnidge & Yougmi, 2015).
The year is 2010. A then nine year old me stands in line at the cafeteria, waiting to buy a lukewarm chicken patty, and a side of greasy tater tots. The cafeteria is filled with kids whose eyes are glowing. The only thought on their mind is to get back to their seats and socialize. This however, was not the case for me.
It goes without saying that, around the United States, and also around the World, there are hunger problems. One crucial area is with school age children. Nutritious foods in the right amounts are essential for everyone, but particularly for children. In early childhood, adequate nutrition can ensure healthy growth, proper organ formation and function, a strong immune system, and neurological and cognitive development. Nutrition also has increasingly been recognized as a basic pillar for social and economic development. Well-nourished children can learn new skills, think critically and contribute to society.
