On September 22, 2014, Wissahickon School District held a school board meeting to be updated on daily events or decisions in the community. The President, Charles McIntyre, led the meeting that started with roll call, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the welcoming of guests. The people on board stated they would go off the agenda because Tina Viletto from the I.U. just arrived from a day trip to Harrisburg to attend hearings on the state education system. She informed us that basic education funding was the problem; in response to the situation, the state government passed the cigarette tax in Philadelphia. She also described the funding factors that make up the education spending formula. I was very shocked when she mentioned about Senate Bill 1193, which states that teachers can carry firearms, could show up in the next session. The first to talk was Donna Salen, mother of two daughters who ride Bus 173. She complained Shady Grove Elementary School morning bus (173) was inefficient because it went south to north and then south again. Trying to get the board’s approval to talk with the director of transportation, she printed out maps suggesting a new more efficient route that minimized the time the children were on the bus. Laura LeGower and Ying Sue also complained about this bus. They claimed it causes more pollution and wastes tax money. Having to drive their kids eight minutes to school to prevent a fifty-minute bus ride puts more cars on the road and creates more traffic. Towards the end of the meeting, a man on the school board offered to talk with them after the meeting to set up a plan for meeting with the director or transportation. At times, I noticed that the mayor would have probably been more attentive hearing from irate citizens than listen to Armenta trying to get clarifications to C-5. Unexciting as the council meeting agenda items might have been, it was still fascinating to see local government at work in such an orderly, proper fashion. We may disagree on particular ordinances or agenda items, but we will do so in an appropriate way that does not disrupt the city at large, and even though the topics of discussion were mostly mundane, students should still at one point or another witness their local governments at work. Doing so leads to a greater understanding for how day-to-day city improvements take affect and how important it can be to voice your opinion and be a leader within your community.

I went to the school board meeting on March 21, 2016 in Kanawha. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. Some of the West Hancock staff included Mr. Peterson, Mrs. DeHart, Mrs. Bruns, Mr. Francis, Mrs. Gast and others. The other people who were there were parents and other community members. The first part of the meeting was the revision of the budget and presentation of the budget. This was given by Wayne Kronneman. He explained the budget of this year and how it compared to last years. Attending an NA meeting during finals was one of my smarter decisions, as I procrastinate my work until the very last minute this week. However, in my opinion, going to a meeting was a good type of procrastination compared to other things I could be doing. Instead of going with the same friend this time, I asked a friend who was struggling with a ________ addiction. Not knowing that I was aware of his addiction, I asked him to join so I didn’t have to go alone; and he was more than happy to join me. I was very happy he agreed to join, because hopefully it helps him with his personal addiction, and he continues to return to the meetings.

Visiting your local government is a good way to stay involved and stay updated with all the local issues. The reason people go to these local meetings is to get their voices heard and to try to change issues that they don’t agree with. The government meeting that I attended was at Julia Morgan Elementary School for Lodi Unified School District; the meeting was held on February 16, 2016. There were some minute topics being discussed about the school district but the main topics of the meeting were about authorizing the transfer of one-time funds for outstanding mandate claims to the special reserve fund for Capital outlay, Communications, and Reports. While attending this meeting I learned a lot about what was going on in Lodi.
In the Washoe County School District many people, especially students, struggle with illogical bus routes. For some unorganized students, the struggle of being at the bus stop before the sun rises and riding the bus for what may seem like forever is crushing, and staying silent on it is a burden. As a society we should at least acknowledge this as an issue, and try to cut the stop time and bus ride to a minimum. It is a little-known issue, yet it does have some simple solutions that would help a large portion of students. These include reducing the number of stops, and altering the rout.
Attitudes and opinions can be changed to align with the needs of schools and children without adding additional monetary resources. This will build much needed trust between tax payers, schools, and government officials so that even more constructive talks and decisions can be made in the future. Budget cuts are negatively impacting students, teachers and families. Consider how budget cuts to education are hurting families and children and take a stand to stop these actions.
In my opinion, student voice refers not only to the perspectives of the student body of HWDSB, but also to the perspectives of each individual student, and the perspectives of the various demographics of students in the board. It encompasses the concerns, questions, and opinions of each of the almost 50000 students in the board. As a school board, HWDSB’s ultimate goal is to provide a learning environment for students which allows them to grow and flourish to their greatest potential. It is hard to do this without considering the perspective of students in matters that directly or indirectly affect them.

In the spring of 2016, I took interest in student government and ran for a position called Student School Board Trustee in the Thames Valley District School Board. The position of Student Trustee is a position mandated by the Government of Ontario that exists to give a voice to the thousands of students within the school board. I was successfully won my election after campaigning to win the support of student representatives from schools across the Thames Valley and a strong debate performance. During my time as the School Trustee – Elect, I wasted no time preparing for my role and participating in the governance process.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. When most people think about an eventful or memorable place, they almost certainly would not picture a bus. As we all know, buses are not exactly attractive. The design scheme is the same in almost every bus: rows and rows of brown seats, a thin black aisle down the middle of the bus, hundreds of hazy windows, and the big, lemon-yellow exterior. Not many people, I am sure, would consider buses to be an important part of their lives. However, if a person were to think about it, they would realize that they probably have had at least one memorable experience in their life that took place on a bus.
As you can see the school board handles many issues from budgets, to tenure, to performance scores, to conferences. Although this paper did not cover everything in the meeting, it summarized what took place, and what affects it would have on teachers. The decisions made no matter how big or small can influence how and what task a teacher performs. The school board meeting was interesting because you are able to see how the changes could affect you personally.
