The sauk-fox tribe was originally two separate tribes, called the Sauk and meskwaki. The two tribes were related to each other, but they also spoke the same language. Than a war with the french almost took the Fox tribe out, so the tribe went to the Sauk tribe, for protection. To this day both tribes live together. As the Sauk and Fox tribe. (thesis statement???) Sauk, sounds like sock, and Sac, sounds like sack, are yellow earth people, that comes from the name Asakawa. The tribe came from michigan and wisconsin. Reservations are land that belong to the tribe. They make the rules, have its own government, police, etc. The reservation is just like a small country, but they have to abide the american laws. In the past, there were two leader, one that took care of war plans, like military and police, and they were elected by other warriors of the tribe, he was called the war chief . The other was passed down by the father, he took care of the domestic and diplomatic things, called a peace chief. A lot of the Natives, in the sauk-Fox tribe speak english, as their language is dying off. Many of the elder tribe members still know how to speak the Meskwaki-Sauk language. Though the children of the tribe do not know how to speak the language, but some of the tribe members are trying to keep their heritage alive. In the beginning, the tribe children did not have much time to play as they were busy helping the parents and doing chores. The children did have toys, the girls had dolls made out of cornhusks. Like many tribe the babies were carried on the mother's back in a cradleboard.
