As of the last couple decades, it seems as though gays and lesbians are becoming more and more prominent in our society. They are achieving the same goals, working in the same jobs, and proving themselves to be just as beneficial as the average heterosexual person. So why is it that a straight couple can get married but a gay couple cannot? Many people do not believe that gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to get married because it is morally wrong. However, most of these people cannot explain what makes gay marriage “morally wrong.” I have done an extensive amount of research on an ethical explanation as to why gay couples should not be allowed to get married. Unfortunately, it seems as though we have forgotten about the gays and lesbians in our society that have not been allowed the same rights as the heterosexuals. This directly contradicts the so-called “justice for all” that America promises its citizens through the Constitution. Since the creation of our nation, Americans have been extremely conscious about making sure that they are given the rights that they deserve. It brings happiness to the couple and in no way is it reasonable to consider this immoral. The basic philosophical idea of Utilitarianism is generally held to be that the morally right action is the action that produces the most good. When putting this approach in the context of gay marriage it is easy to see that a Utilitarian would be open to giving gays and lesbians the right to marry. The leading forerunner of Utilitarianism was an English philosopher named John Stuart Mill. He professed that, “Actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness.” He defined happiness simply as pleasure with the absence of pain. So if gay marriage is only producing happiness then there is no way that it could be immoral. In fact, not allowing gay couples the right to get married would cause them pain and the absence of pleasure which is called unhappiness. In the Utilitarian theory unhappiness is considered immoral.
