Sankofa filmed and directed by Hallie Gerima in 1993 explores the past in which African Americans were brought over as slaves and what they endured while there. In the movie, the main character Mona who is also portrayed as Shola, goes to Ghana for a photoshoot where she encounters the “village protector” Sankofa. Sankofa sees Mona and notices she is very first worldly, she’s wearing makeup and a blonde wig. While noting that she has lost her roots he approaches her to remind her to remember where she came from. Soon after she is jolted into a spiritual time travel back to the past where she experiences the life of those who lived in Ghana at the time of slavery. Mona who then takes on the role of Shola is taken though the experiences of traveling to the states, being branded, and mistreated by the master. Once at the plantation she takes us on a journey through the life of the individuals on the plantation as well as well as her own. Throughout the movie there are many concepts explored. Often one will see a sense of resilience in African Americans today. When faced with adversity they often turn to faith and look at history for ways to solve it. Recently these three concepts have shown up in the news with police brutality and the recent presidential election. During today’s issues just like in the movie African Americans turned to history for answers but also display faith and courage when rebelling against the oppressive system. Sankofa shows that the use of history, faith, and courage have always been used to create stronger individuals in the African American community. African Americas are always taught to use their history to keep themselves safe from a young age. History is used as an example to prevent more turmoil in the African American community. My paper is written in a chronological order to reflect on the progress blacks have made during the years—by expounding on the earliest religion of Africans to black religion of today. David W. Blight's book Beyond the Battlefield: Race, Memory and the American Civil War, is an intriguing look back into the Civil War era which is very heavily studied but misunderstood according to Blight. Blight focuses on how memory shapes history Blight feels, while the Civil War accomplished it goal of abolishing slavery, it fell short of its ultimate potential to pave the way for equality. Blight attempts to prove that the Civil War does little to bring equality to blacks. This book is a composite of twelve essays which are spilt into three parts. The Preludes describe blacks during the era before the Civil War and their struggle to over come slavery and describes the causes, course and consequences of the war. Problems in Civil War memory describes black history and deals with how during and after the war Americans seemed to forget the true meaning of the war which was race. And the postludes describes some for the leaders of black society and how they are attempting to keep the memory and the real meaning of the Civil War alive and explains the purpose of studying historical memory.
In this story it clearly shows us what the courts really mean by freedom, equality, liberty, property and equal protection of the laws. The story traces the legal challenges that affected African Americans freedom. To justify slavery as the “the way things were” still begs to define what lied beneath slave owner’s abilities to look past the wounded eyes and beating hearts of the African Americans that were so brutally possessed.
The identity of Black Power was often connected with hate, violence, and racial resentment. Leaders like Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael, and Huey Newton all spoke endlessly on issue of race relations and white oppression. Malcolm X and his “message to the grassroots” is an excellent example of how X and Black power enthusiasts viewed race relations. The speech emphasized the shared experience that all Negroes face in the United States, expressing that black people should unite under a revolution of a common enemy, “The European.” He continues how the Europeans have suppressed black ability to reach and maximize their full potential. X’s “Message to the Grassroots” speech stands a testament of Black Power’s perceptions; through a common enemy the group was able to form a collective identity.
In the film Sankofa, the audience is introduced to the slavery system experienced by African-Americans, through a series of visions. The story initiates with a woman named Mona as she is being photographed by a white tourist in modern day Ghana. In fact, there are many tourists visiting the ancient buildings surrounding the African culture. They are all fascinated by the culture and events that had occurred in previous years, unlike, the African Americans themselves. A black man appears to want the tourist to leave due to the African blood forced to be spilled there. He wants Mona to return to the past and remember all she has experienced. The right of African American is an essential subject for many texts in any historical time period. Malcolm X and Danzy Senna both pick the discrimination of African American as their main point for their essays. In The Mulatto and Millenium, Danzy Senna tells her own stories about how she grows up as a black girl with a Wasp mother and a black-Mexican father. In another hand, From The Ballot or the Bullet is a speech of Malcolm to persuade African American to group together regardless religion to fight for their human right. Although From the Ballot or the Bullet (Malcolm X) and The Mulatto Millennium (Danzy Senna) share the same main idea and some rhetorical devices, each of them has some unique devices that make their essays more interesting and influenced.

However, they were able to change adapt and find hope even when it didn’t seem as though there was any to be found. The African American culture has been greatly shaped around what their ancestors were put through and the struggles that they endured. When talking about the history of African-Americans at the turn of the twentieth century, two notable names cannot be left out; Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Du Bois. They were both African-American leaders in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, fighting for social justice, education and civil rights for slaves, and both stressed education. This was a time when blacks were segregated and discriminated against. Both these men had a vision to free blacks from this oppression. While they came from different backgrounds, Washington coming from a plantation in Virginia where he was a slave, and Du Bois coming from a free home in Massachusetts, they both experienced the heavy oppression blacks were under in this Post-Civil War society. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Du Bois were both pioneers in striving to obtain equality for blacks, yet their ways of achieving this equality were completely different. W.E.B Du Bois is the more celebrated figure today since he had the better method because it didn’t give the whites any power, and his method was intended to achieve a more noble goal than Washington’s.

Nearly three centuries ago, black men and women from Africa were brought to America and put into slavery. They were treated more cruelly in the United States than in any other country that had practiced slavery. African Americans didn’t gain their freedom until after the Civil War, nearly one-hundred years later. Even though African Americans were freed and the constitution was amended to guarantee racial equality, they were still not treated the same as whites and were thought of as second class citizens. One man had the right idea on how to change America, Martin Luther King Jr. had the best philosophy for advancing civil rights, he preached nonviolence to express the need for change in America and he united both African Americans and whites together to fight for economic and social equality.
THE WAYS OF MEETING OPPRESSION IS AN ESSAY WRITTEN BY MARTIN LUTHER KING JR., ADDRESSING SEGREGATION THAT IS SPECIFICALLY DIRECTED TOWARD THE AFRICAN AMERICAN AUDIENCE. King’s primary audience is the African Americans, but also he has secondary audiences that he addresses, which are a combination of Christians or those who know of, or believe in the Christian views, as well as people in the legal system. He gives examples through his text that will demonstrate how he addresses mostly the African Americans, but also the various other audiences he is trying to reach to through his memorable speech. In his writing, he tells of three ways that they deal with oppression, and based on these he sends out a message to all who have read or heard his words. This message states what has been done in the past, as well as what should be done based on these past experiences. King chooses to speak to certain people through certain contexts and key phrases. In choosing certain phrases and also on how he states his words, he is successful in influencing all his audiences that he intended to persuade. The words that he carefully chose will tell how and why he wanted to focus on the primary and secondary audiences of his choice.
