The House on Mango Street
“Sire”
As the chapter opens, the first impression of Sire is one of a James Dean type of character. Sire and his friends are just sitting on their bikes, pitching pennies, or in other words, gambling. Esperanza tells us that she is scared of them, which makes me wonder why she would be afraid of them? She then says how her dad calls him a “punk.”
Esperanza then starts to describe Sire’s girlfriend, Lois. The words that Esperanza uses to describe Lois are almost words of envy and respect. Words like “little pink seashells,” “big girl hands,” and “bones are long like ladies bones.” It is almost like in Esperanza’s mind Lois is the mold for the perfect girl in the world and the way Esperanza describes that Sire lets Lois ride his bike like it is almost a privilege. It is a privilege because of all of his friends and all the people who live on this block, he lets no one else but Lois ride his bike. When Esperanza describes the things that Sire does at night like drinking and other things like that. Esperanza’s mom describes Lois as “one of those girls who go into alleys” and Esperanza should not be around those kinds of girls.
This is one of the most important chapters because this is where Esperanza shows that she is growing up from a girl to a woman. Esperanza says that someday she “wants to be all new and shiny.” She says that she wants to sit out bad and have a boy hanging all over her. I find this interesting because I’m sure that everyone goes through something like this where we want to be rebellious and defy our parents. These are just some of the signs that Esperanza does not want to accept what her parents say is law, and she wants to try out some things of her own. For example, in the beginning of the chapter, Esperanza does not say that Sire is a punk, her father does. With children, this is not a good way to be. This just makes Sire seem exciting and sparks Esperanza’s interest to be around him.
When Esperanza is describing Lois she uses words that are not necessarily good things to be. Pink toenails, not knowing how to tie her shoes, smelling like baby powder. All of these things are helpless, baby-like things.
Esperanza finally comes to the conclusion that she does not need to fit into the mold of Mango Street. She also realizes that by making her own world, she can do bigger and better things and come back to help others on Mango Street. Not everybody can fit into the same mold and Esperanza made her own. . Esperanza leaving shows that she is a leader and hopefully she will have the others from Mango Street follow in her path. Maybe other people will fit into Esperanza’s mold or they will use her as an example. Esperanza used the other women as an example to make something of herself so all of the negative people she meets and has in her life, they made her the person she wanted to be.
Esperanza is a young girl who struggles with feelings of loneliness and feeling that she doesn’t fit in because she is poor. She always wanted to fit in with the other kids and feel like she was one of them. She loves to write because it helps her feel better about herself writing about her life and her community. Writing helps her with
Esperanza tries to be a good friend to Sally, but ends up appearing immature and silly. Esperanza feels shame, as she “wanted to be dead”, to “turn into the rain”, and have “my eyes melt into the ground like black snails” (Cisneros 97). With sensory-rich imagery, the author uses similes and metaphors to describe Esperanza’s feelings of utter mortification as she embarrasses herself in front of Sally. Esperanza becomes confused about her newfound sexuality and her loss of innocence when she begins acting strangely, yet awkwardly around boys. She doesn’t know whether to act like a child or an adult because although she wants to be mature and glamorous like Sally, and she gets exposed to the harsh nature of society. The disillusioned view of becoming mature and having boys notice her is especially realized by Esperanza when she gets raped at a carnival. Through detailed imagery, Cisneros describes the dirtiness of the boy, elaborating on “his dirty fingernails against my skin” and “his sour smell again” (Cisneros 100) and the confusion and anger from Esperanza. After this experience, Esperanza blames Sally instead for covering up the truth about boys and is heartbroken about the real truth of sexuality and men. It is clear that Esperanza vividly remembers this awful experience, and just reflecting on this experience causes her thoughts to
Women are seen as failure and can’t strive without men in the Mexican-American community. In this novel you can see a cultural approach which examines a particular aspect of a culture and a gender studies approach which examines how literature either perpetuates or challenges gender stereotypes. Over and over, Esperanza battled with how people perceived her and how she wished to be perceived. In the beginning of the book, Esperanza speaks of all the times her family has moved from one place to another. “Before that we lived on Loomis on the third floor, and before that we lived on Keeler.
In the vignette titled Beautiful and Cruel Esperanza declares that she has “decided not to grow up tame like the others who lay their necks on the threshold waiting for the ball and chain” (88). She also remarks that “her power is her own. She will not give it away . . . I am one who leaves the table like a man, without putting back the chair or picking up the plate” (89). Esperanza is demonstrating that she does not want to become tied down in the traditional sense of marriage when she refers to it as a ball and chain. As she has been growing up within Mango Street she has been witness to relationship in which the women become objects of their husbands and loss the identity of themselves. Esperanza is aware of the power imbalance between the men and women in her Latino community and openly states that she wants to be powerful. When she writes that she will not give her power away she is demonstrating again that she will not hand over her power to the men in her life as Earl’s wife and Rafaela have done. In growing up on Mango Street Esperanza’s notions about the relationship between women and have begun to shape her outlook on life. In her last quotes she is clearly decided that she fight back against the stereotype of what is expected from a young girl or female. In stating that she
Esperanza begins as a very wealthy girl in Mexico, and doesn’t think about how lucky she is to have the privileges that she has. She can have almost anything she wants and has to do little work. Esperanza barely even thinks about the lower classes. They are not part of her life. But when her ranch is burned down and her father killed, she has to leave Mexico and enter the United States as an illegal immigrant. But by doing so, she is forced into contact with many people far less wealthy and well-off than her. When Esperanza enters Zacatecas to board the train, she is surprised that they are not in the fancy section. Instead, they are in a car with peasants and beggars. “Esperanza had never been so close to so many peasants before. When she went to school, all of her friends were like her. When she went to town, she was escorted and hurried around any beggars. And the peasants always kept their distance. That was simply the way it was. She couldn’t help but wonder if they would steal her things.” (p. 67). Esperanza has an obvious suspicion of the peasants during her train ride. She tells her mother that she cannot travel in this car , and that the people didn’t look trustworthy. A little bit into the trainride ...
In the book, Esperanza doesn’t want to follow the norms of the life around her; she wants to be independent. Esperanza states her independence by stating, “Not a man’s house. Not a daddy’s. A house all my own,” (Cisneros 108.) The syntax of these sentences stick out and are not complete thoughts, yet they convey much meaning and establish Esperanza’s feeling of not belonging. Esperanza’s feeling of not belonging is also emphasized when her sisters tell her that the events of her life have made her who she is and that is something she can not get rid of. Her sisters explain that the things she has experienced made her who she is by saying, “You will always be esperanza. You will always be mango street. You can’t erase what you know” (105.) What her sisters are trying to tell her is that the past has changed her but it doesn’t have to be a negative thing; it can be used to make her a better person who is stronger and more independent. Esperanza realizes that the things around her don’t really add up to what she believes is right, which also conveys the sense of not
Esperanza is relying on her childhood to help her through life she feels like “a red balloon tied to an anchor” (9,1,3) This passage describes that Esperanza singles herself out for her differences instead of her similarities and she knows it. She also sees her differences as a source of her isolating herself. She floats in the sky for all of the rest of us to see, dangling from a string. Esperanza is longing on for an escape like a balloon similar to her experiences with our society. However against the face that Cisneroz gives her a light voice, doesn't mean that it's not just as strong and
Emotional intelligence is the ability to gauge your emotions as well as the emotions of those around you, to make a distinction among those emotions, and then use that information to help guide your actions (Educated Business Articles , 2017). It also helps us consciously identify and conceive the ways in which we think, feel, and act when engaging with others, while giving us a better insight to ourselves (Educated Business Articles , 2017). Emotional Intelligence defines the ways in which we attain as well as retain information, setting priorities, in addition to regulating our daily actions. It is also suggested that as much as 80% of our success in life stems from our
The man taunts her, saying “I love you, I love you little Spanish girl” (100). The man directly refers to Esperanza as Spanish rather than just calling her a young girl. Either way though it is completely repulsive and awful. He knowingly targets her a “little girl” and she cries and feels incredibly uncomfortable. The chapter indirectly hints that the man took advantage of Esperanza due to both her race and her status as a younger girl. Through this discrimination, Esperanza comforts the horrible realities of sexism and racism when before it was more passive. Though passive sexism and racism is not okay either, just because she gets sexaully assaulted doesn’t mean lesser oppression is
This paper defined Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) and differentiated between the two terms often used interchangeably in papers to be synonymous for emotional intelligence. Businesses benefited greatly when employees utilized soft skills such as emotional intelligence, displayed a positive disposition and were able to work in healthier, more productive work environments. These competences were developed through self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social-relationship management. The four elements were described in the Competency Based model by Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis. Not all employees exhibited the same level or maturity of emotional Intelligence. Identification, development and implementation of the EQ skill set were required of employees for increased productivity and overall benefits for the organization such as harmony in the work environment with increased productivity and better team work because of the improved problem solving abilities developed from EI.
Emotional intelligence is defined as “a set of competencies that distinguishes how people manage feelings and interactions with others. It is the ability to identify one’s own emotions, as well as those of one’s co-workers or employees” (Goleman, Boyatzis, & McKee, in Pierce & Newstrom (Eds.), 2008, p. 180). If a leader just focuses on the bottom line, the financial outcome, the “show me the money attitude”, then they are doomed to fail. Knowledge@Wharton (2004) interview Dr. Deepak Chopra, ...
While working for the airline industry I encountered many personalities. Colleagues that worked only a few months with the similar qualifications took the lunge and applied to managerial positions. When promoted, it made me wonder what set them apart from other candidates, others with even more qualifications. What I noticed was similar, in those that were promoted, was their ability to resolve conflict and mentorship qualities. These qualities what is known as Emotional Intelligence. In Inter-Act, Professor Rudolph Verderber and Professor Kathleen Verderber quote Dr. Peter Salovey and Dr. John Mayer’s studies, emotional intelligence is “the ability to monitor your own and other’s emotions and to use this information to guide your communications”
Emotional Intelligence is an ability stemming from the feeling of empathy that most people acquire as they experience new things in their life. It is the ability to monitor the emotions within yourself and that of others in order to discriminate between feelings and label them as such. We use this emotional information to guide our thinking patterns and behaviors. High emotional intelligence levels directly correlates within an individual to greater mental health, exceptional job performance, and more advanced leadership skills.
