Samuel Harrison Drachman, better known as S. H. Drachman, was a significant Jewish pioneer in Arizona. He was born on November 9, 1837 in Petrokoy, Russian Poland. His parents were Harris and Rebecca Drachman. He had 2 siblings: Augusta and Philip Drachman. Philip had many difficulties with his health and he thought Arizona’s dry climate would be his treatment. Samuel was to be by his side. Samuel was 18 years old when he and Philip came to America. They shared a boat with fellow future Arizona pioneers: the Goldwater brothers. Their first stop was in New York. They stayed there with his relatives for a short while, but soon went their separate ways. Samuel left to Charleston, South Carolina after hearing of his mother’s death. There, he worked as a staff officer of General Beauregard of the Confederate States Army for the duration of the Civil War. In 1867, he traveled to California. He stayed there briefly before going to Tucson, Arizona to join his brother in business. Philip Drachman convinced him to come to Tuscon for the economic opportunities that it offers. Philip had a very prosperous time in his career. He was a landowner, cattle rancher, and merchant. He had also been elected to the Territorial Legislature, as well as establishing the B'nai B'rith Lodge of Tucson.
Upon Samuel Drachman’s arrival in Tuscon, Philip got him to work for him and Isaac Goldberg. His job for them was mainly composed of government contracting, letter writing, making out statements, writing contracts, and stock control. Shortly after, he began establishing his career as a businessman and merchant. Drachman opened a cigar shop in Tucson. He then made a statement proclaiming his accomplishment:

At the age of two his family moved to New York City and he attended grade school there. When he was seven he began writing children’s fiction. He also expressed himself through painting. At the age of twelve he and his family moved to Chile where he completed his education, married, and in 1967 became a naturalized Chilean citizen. He attended graduate school in Berkley California in 1968 and 1969 and then he returned to Chile.

When the call went out in the summer of 1961 for volunteers to ride buses throughout the South to help integrate public transportation, a large percentage of the people who made a commitment to take on this dangerous assignment were Jews. The life of a child in the 1930-1940 was not an easy life not if you were a Nazi, not if you were Jewish. These Children lost their childhood because of a war. Their shattered childhood creates stories that seem horrific to us today. Life as a child growing up in a Nazi family is probably easier than dealing with the problems that the Jewish children have. In the group there was even a small ‘Gestapo’ that would make sure all the children were doing the correct task if not the ‘Gestapo’ would report this. On March 2, 1793, Samuel Houston was born to Major Sam Houston and Elizabeth Paxton Houston. He was the fifth of nine children. Born at Timber Ridge, Rockbridge County, in the Shenandoah Valley. At the age of thirteen, his father, Major Sam Houston, died suddenly at Dennis Callighan's Tavern near present-day Callaghan, Virginia in Alleghany County, 40 miles west of Timber Ridge while on militia inspections. Mrs. Elizabeth Houston took her nine children to a farm on Baker Creek in Tennessee. Samuel was unhappy with farming and storekeeping, so he ran away from home to live with the Cherokees on Hiwasee Island in the Tennessee River near present-day Dayton, Tennessee. At the age of seventeen, Sam returned to his family for a short period of time and then returned back to the Cherokees where, he was adopted by Chief Oo-Loo-Te-Ka and given the Indian name, "The Raven." Two years later, Sam returned to Maryville, Tennessee, where he opened a successful private school.
In addition to Dred being a slave, he was employed as a farmhand, stevedore, craftsman, and general handyman. Dred moved around a lot from Alabama, Illinois, and eventually relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. When Dred was 15 in 1818, his family moved to Alabama with the Blows. His owner, Peter Blow, had six children so Dred’s job was to keep track of the children. Dred never learned to read or write so if there were any type of signs on the way to Alabama or anywhere they most likely made no sense to him at all.
The United States could have contributed more efficiently by helping the Jewish people escape the barbarity that occurred in Europe with the leadership of their current president, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Although President Roosevelt was concerned about the Jewish people, he did not care enough to initiate change and get them out of Europe until it was too late. No black school was available locally so he was forced to move. He said "Good-bye" to his adopted parents, Susan and Moses, and headed to Newton County in southwest Missouri. Here is where the path of his education began. He studied in a one-room schoolhouse and worked on a farm to pay for it. He ended up, shortly after, moving with another family to Fort Scott in Kansas. In Kansas, he worked as a baker in a kitchen while he attended the High School. He paid for his schooling with the money he earned from winning bake-off contests. From there he moved all over bouncing from school to school. "College entrance was a struggle again because of racial barriers."2 At the age of thirty he gained acceptance to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

His father had decided that he would give his son a chance to experience the business side of life by seeking him a job in New York at Duncan, Sherman & Company in which his father was well known and such a notable man and had established a large asset within this company.
Jews have been in New York before America even became a country. New York has always been a symbol of hope and opportunity for Jews for over 350 years. Jews’ cultural, social, economic, and political roles in New York have dramatically affected their lives both positively and negatively. Ever since 1654, Jews have been affected by New York through its cultural, political, economic, and social environments which has ultimately made American Jewry what it is today.
Judaism is one of the most ancient religions in the world. Abraham, his descendants, and Moses are believed to have been the founders. According to Jewish beliefs until Abraham man worshiped many Gods. The story begins with Abraham and his wife Sarah trying to conceive a child. When Abraham was 99 and Sarah 90 God came to Abraham and told him they would have a son. After the child was born God again came to Abraham and tested his beliefs by asking him to sacrifice his only son Isaac. Isaac willingly went with Abraham to be sacrificed. Before Abraham could sacrifice Isaac God sent an angel down to stop him. As a reward for his faith God made a covenant with Abraham that he and his descendants would be protected as long as they continued to show faith in him and live a life that was wholesome. Also from this it is said God blessed Abraham with many children. His son Isaac had two sons Jacob and Esau, Jacob who changes his name to Israel had twelve sons. Israel’s had twelve sons they are the “12 tribes of Israel” and their descendants are later known as the Israelites also called Hebrews.
