In deciding between reaching for a dream career and settling for an attainable job choice, individuals are psychologically choosing between safety and risk. Risk has had many benefits to the human species and is responsible for pushing humans to venture into ecological regions allowing evolution to shape the human animal into the creatures seen today, yet too much risk ultimately leads to reckless decision making and harmful outcomes. More often than not, the outcomes of events that occur in a person’s life is the product of the idea of the self-fulfilling prophecy. It is that which “occurs when a person’s expectations of an event make the outcome more likely to occur than would otherwise have been true” (Adler and Towne, Looking Out, Looking In 66). Or restated, as Henry Ford once put it, “If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t, you’re right!” This brief research paper touches on the two types of self-fulfilling prophecies, those that are self-imposed and those that are imposed by others. Every time I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always had different answers. An author, a photographer, even a video game tester. I've juggled lots of different careers, and yet I still don't seem to know which one I really want to do. When I was younger I always loved to write. Fiction was my favorite genre, especially when it comes to dystopian worlds. I always joked with my friends and family that after I become an author and "make millions off my first book", I'd be able to buy them whatever they desired. We are part of a journey that has been progressing since the beginning of time. However, we as a society always seem to be looking past the present to some climactic end -- the finish line, the future, when in reality, there is no finish line. Society always looks to the future for the answers to today's problems, believing that the future holds something exciting that the present lacks. This is not the way we should be thinking! We should be asking ourselves, "What finish line are we hoping to arrive to?" Or better yet, "Do we want to arrive at a finish line at all?"
The world we live in is overflowing with choices and chances. Every day, each and every human must make thousands of decisions. Some decisions may be rather simple to make, or not present a high chance for an unfavorable outcome. While one may decide the apple they picked up from the store is not very sweet, the cost lost on the apple is rather minimal and the consumer will most likely be presented with many more opportunities to pick a delicious apple. However, some choices are much more complicated. Decisions such as where to invest one’s money, or what physical challenges to endure, present very serious consequences. If the wrong decision is made, one could lose their financial security, or even their life.

Have you ever been faced with a decision that you knew what you should have done but chose differently? At one point in a person’s life, everyone experiences making a risky decision, and depending on the decision it may play out in favor of what that person was hoping for, other times not. The studied performed is called Risky Decisions and it takes into account the idea of a framing effect where an outcome of a decision can almost be predicted based off of the wording (Kahneman and Tversky, 1982). The point of this experiment is to discover if people take risks that involve any type of gain if loss is a possibility opposed to the idea of risk aversion when there are only gains. “Risky” has different definitions depending on the person that is asked and how the context is framed, but it all breaks down to the expected utility theory based off of the idea that if a person has relevant information they will make a decision based off of the maximum expected utility (Goldstein 2011). Utility normally refers to monetary value, but other factors such as emotions, stress, and even video games can lead to an individual making risky decisions to experience a better payoff in the end because people feel the need to justify their decisions to others.
Risk taking is considered an everyday staple of life and a major part of growing up. When we limit the risks we take in our lives we also limit the capabilities those risks present, such as encountering new experiences and situations that improve us as human beings. Risk taking is imperative to personal growth and when discussed in good context it seems harmless, however that is only a half truth.
