On December 13, 2003, Saddam Hussein al-Majid was found hiding in a deep “spider hole” only nine miles away from his birthplace of Tikrit (Rise and Fall of a Dictator). Saddam Hussein is noted as one of the world’s worst dictators. He is often compared to Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin because of the brutal policies and actions he took during his time in power. Saddam Hussein was executed on December 30, 2006. He was sentenced to death shortly after the death penalty was reinstated in Iraq. Saddam Hussein was condemned to death by hanging because of his crimes against humanity. Hussein’s charges were mostly banked on his efforts in Halabja in 1988 and his invasion of Kuwait in 1991. In his time as vice president of Iraq, Hussein silently conducted his iron-fisted takeover of Iraq. He had developed a larger military, strengthened Iraq’s economy and started Iraq’s first chemical weapons program (Saddam Hussein: Biography). Hussein had a secret police that took control of the dirtiest deeds that Hussein wanted done, like manning his political prisons, carrying out public executions and kidnappings. Hussein’s prisons were riddled with death, torture, disease and starvation. Hussein had no regard for the people he kept in his detention centers. Hussein kept prisoners for leverage and for revenge. Hussein was creative with his institutions, he used dog kennels, deep holes that constantly collapsed and steel boxes like those at mortuaries as cells for his prisoners. His regime used forms of torture like gouging of the eyes, electrocution, and waterboarding. During his appearance in court, he was charged with many crimes, that which include the 1988 attack on the Kurdish village of Halabja, the invasion of Kuwait in 1991, and the murder of political and religious leaders collectively during his 30 years in office (Saddam Hussein Biography). On December 30, 2006, he defended himself for the charges of, crimes against humanity, the use of WMD’s, the Geneva Convention and 17 UDHR articles of 31 total were violated (UN General Assembly). The United Nations took affirmative action when Hussein’s facades were dissolved and his crimes were in plain sight. A quote from the UN commission shows their feelings toward Hussein “the systematic, widespread and extremely grave violations of human rights and of international humanitarian law by the Government of Iraq, resulting in an all-pervasive repression and oppression sustained by broad-based discrimination and widespread terror,” (Bureau of Industry and Security, 4).
