I. Introduction: Saturn’s History
Saturn is the sixth planet away from the sun. 890,700,000 miles is how far the planet is from the sun. Titan is the largest of all Saturn’s moons. The second largest moon, after Ganymede, in our solar system is Titan. Saturn was called Cronus the god of agriculture, sky, and time. Cronus was actually a titan, but back then titans were worshipped the same way gods were. Cronus became the god of sky by overthrowing his father. He was the youngest titan and is also referred to as Cronos, Kronos, or Saturn. All Saturn’s moon is named after titans because Saturn was named after Cronus lord of the titans. The planet has 62 moons. Titan the largest out of 62 moons is bigger than mercury, the planet closest to the sun. Saturn can be seen through the naked eye of a human.
Back then Saturn’s rings were mistaken as a moon. Christiaan Huygens figured out that the supposed moons were rings. His discovery of the rings was made in 1659. Christiaan Huygens was born April 14, 1629 The Hague, Netherlands. July 8, 1695 The Hague, Netherlands is when he past away. Jean-Dominique Cassini was the discoverer of four major moons (Saturn’s Moons). Lapetus, Rhea, Tethys, and Dione were the names of the four major moons Jean-Dominique Cassini had discovered. He also discovered a narrow gap in 1675. The gap splits Saturn’s ring system into two parts. The separation between Saturn’s ring system is called the Cassini Division. There’s a space craft orbiting around Saturn called Cassini which is named after Jean-Dominique Cassini. Jean-Dominique Cassini was born February 8, Paris Observatory, Paris, France and died April 16, 1756 Thury, France. Galileo created a telescope and was the first to view Saturn from a telescope. Saturn’s strong magnetic field and two outer rings were discovered when an aircraft named Pioneer 11 took a visit to the planet in 1979. Pioneer 11 was also the first aircraft to ever reach Saturn. The Voyager space craft helped discover nine moons and ringlets. Saturn has rings that are made up of ringlets. The Cassini spacecraft weighs six tons (5,650 kilograms) and is a two story tall probe. The Cassini spacecraft is the largest interplanetary spacecraft ever built. This spacecraft currently orbits Saturn. Saturn is an extraordinary planet with many mysteries that haven’t been answered, like how many rings are there to the planet no one knows because it is nearly impossible to figure out how many rings does the Jewel of our solar system have.
