S.M described that becoming older means that he must live a joyful life. It is significant for him to feel positive as he is entering a phase where he can feel useless because he does not perform the same activities as when he was young. He feels that as he grows older companionship is crucial because he does not want to spend his days alone. However, he does not have a close relationship with his wife and daughters. He feels that is the time for him to work on his past mistakes and seek for his family. Growing older also means increasing his faith and becoming closer to God. S.M feels that he made many mistakes as a younger person and needs to find forgiveness in the Lord. It means that his body is changing and declining in some areas.

In this article “ The Old Man isn’t There Anymore” Kellie Schmitt writes about the people she lives with crying in the hallway and when she asks what happened she is told that the old man is gone. This starts the big ordeal of a Chinese funeral that Schmitt learns she knows nothing about. Schmitt confuses the reader in the beginning of the story, as well as pulling in the reader's emotions, and finishes with a twist.
From that quote, I feel like Emanuel feels like his aging will be too big of a burden that he does not want his family to have. His thoughts reflect on the Rowe and Kahn model of successful aging. We were all hoping to grow up when we were young, as the time pass by, we are growing older and having more opportunities to decide what we want. However, every decision you made are always coming with many responsible. Why do we need to be responsible for our actions? What if we did not take responsibility for our own actions? Obviously, we’ll influence our future, but even more we may also influence other people’s life and their point of viewing us. In the short story “A Boy Grows Older” by Morley Callaghan, the main character Jim Sloane is a man that realize his own responsibility after he feels he may influence his parent’s life and decides to take his responsibility in the end. We should take personal responsibility for our actions for preventing us to affect others.

An interview was arranged with an older adult to discuss issues related to aging. The interview was designed to gain appreciation and understanding of an older adult. One theory of aging came into mind when I thought about this topic. Erik Erikson Life-Course and Personality Development theory, “Erikson described the task of old age as balancing the search for integrity and wholeness with a sense of despair.” NS is the older adult that I conducted the interview with. I’ve decided to pick NS to interview because she is very positive about life and her age. Everything that I have come across about aging is negative such as depression, isolation, and illness.

Sometimes the best way to learn is through experience. I have not experienced the aging process. My knowledge of the aging process has only come from what I have observed from the older people in my life and things picked up from various media. However, I have never discussed with someone, who has gone through so much of life, the process of aging and how they have managed it. Mr. Blackman taught me plenty about how to live life as it advances. I also have not had much experience working in group composed of people involved in nursing and social work. While I have experienced working in group, particularly working in a restaurant, this was a unique experience and one from which I have learned. This topic is interesting to me because elderly people should make the best of their last stage of life. As human beings age, according to Erik Erikson, they go through developmental stages that help to create and transform their personalities. If needs are met and the ego is gratified, then the individual is able to move on to the next challenge. Onward they march in life and in stage until they find the end level: integrity versus despair. This has been categorized as adults 65 years and older by Erikson. Here, people are to reminisce and judge their lives in terms of merit or disappointment. Erikson himself had a lot to comb through in his later years.

When asking people about aging, their answers have many facets that are also found in psychological definitions: successful aging is seen as health, maturity and personal growth, self-acceptance, happiness, generativity, coping, and acceptance of age-related limitations. In the psychological sense successful aging is also often seen as the absence of age-associated characteristics (Strawbridge, Wallhagen, & Cohen, 2002). It seems that successful aging means is not aging.
