Women are very important in this world but frequently they are not cared for. Their opinions, wants, and needs are ignored. In the book “Runaway” by Alice Munro there are three short stories “Runaway”, “Chance”, and “Passion” portray three women that over the surprises of life and the path that their decisions take them. Throughout these stories the reader can identify the three strong female characters that share similarities such as love, betrayals and surprises. She expresses her feelings of wanting to run away and asks Mrs. Jamieson for help. On the bus on her way to Toronto, Carla realizes, “she would be lost” (Munro, 27). After years of being used to her life and her husband, Carla knew that she cannot lose her comfort and love. Her character relates to many women now, who cannot be independent because they are scared of change. In another short story called “Chance” by Alice Munro, Juliet was 21 years old on a train on her way to Vancouver when she was surprised by the old men asking her “Is this seat taken”. After the old men sat down, Juliet did not want to have a conversation with the old men and she got up and left. Later Juliet finds out that the old man was suicidal and had killed himself and, “She could never tell anybody about the mistake that had been made, the horrid joke of it. People would think of her exceptionally crude and heartless…”(51). Juliet had a traumatizing event happen to her on the train, which caused her to feel guilty and heartless which made her regret her decision of walking away.
