Nursing is a professional discipline and it provides a direct service to individuals. Nursing is a service which offers comfort, gratification and assistance at those times when individuals are under stress and in relation on their basic human needs. Nursing also offers indirect service which makes a specific contribution to the promotion of health and the recovery from illness. It involves the ability to access situation, arrives at decisions and implements a course of action designed to resolve nursing problems. While growing up we learn that the best way to stay healthy and look great is through proper dieting and regular exercise. With the desire of a tiny waist plaguing America, it can be difficult to decide between healthy dieting an exercise, or extreme fad diets promising fast results. When choosing which method will work best for you can be stressful, it is important to think about what is really best for your body. Each form of dieting has different long term results, can affect your overall health, and can have an effect on the rest of your appearance.
Nursing is both a profession and discipline. The terms profession and discipline are interchangeable in Nursing and education today. Profession comes from Latin meaning, “Public declaration ("utc.edu," 2014, p. 4). This is the drive for nurses to have the commitment of caring for patients. Discipline, also a Latin word means both teaching and knowledge. Thus, providing nurses the need for knowledge to care and teach patients. There are many different frameworks which nurses go and learn by. Otterbein’s tapestry of caring contains six components that are intermixed into the education that we pride ourselves as nursing students on. The mission, values and purpose of the education given to students, prepare them for their nursing profession can be based on the following: caring, commitment, compassion, conscience, confidence, competence and conduct.
Nursing is a profession that has always been in sight for me since I was four years-old and I fractured my elbow. I was playing with one of my friends who was also my neighbor. We were playing with a big pink, round, rubber ball. I remember thinking that it would be amusing to try and hug the ball and roll on the ground. Of course since I was only four at the time, I did not think to check my surroundings to make sure that it was a safe environment to be doing such an act. Once I finished my roll I slammed my elbow on a rock that was peeking through the top of the grass. I immediately shrieked out in pain and then had to go to the hospital. Throughout the whole experience I only remember one part of the hospital, the nurse. From the moment that she starting taking care of me in my room, when I was getting casted, to my discharge from the hospital she did nothing but provide high quality care while also making sure that I felt comfortable and relaxed the whole time. At that moment I told my mother that I wanted to be a nurse and that nothing else was going to persuade my decision.
According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016). Nurses have many jobs and responsibilities and wear many different hats. Nurses can perform at many different levels depending on their scope of practice which is defined by the board of nursing in one’s state of residence. The significance of this article is that nursing is continually changing. The role of the nurse will always be based on direct care giving, however, nursing as an occupation is professional.
Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many would mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians, support staff.
I started my Nursing career in India and then I came to the United States and became an RN. I entered Nursing with the thinking that Nursing is a profession that will always allow me to have a job and all my patients will get better. However, from my experiences I understood that Nursing is more than just giving medications, and it requires clinical competence, cultural sensitivity, ethics, caring for others, and life-long learning about others and the evolving field of medicine. Florence Nightingale once said:
Many of the women in my family are nurses of some sort, so nursing is not some unfamiliar thing to me. Not only that, but I also get hurt often, considering the number of sports that I have played that put stress on my body. I have had to have countless MRIs, x-rays, and surgeries due to injuries or sickness. Throughout all these experiences, there were nurses that helped the procedure to go much more smoothly. I have been on the receiving side of a nurse’s care; I know how good it feels to have someone that put all their effort into caring for you and making sure that you are healthy. After experiencing this, I have decided that I want to be on the giving side of the care of a nurse. I know that already this project has impacted my life by helping me to learn how hard nurses have worked to get nursing to where it is now and how hard nurses have to work every day to fulfill the many duties required of them. Registered Nurses perform the duties of taking care of their patients and making sure they understand the seriousness’s of their estate. Registered Nursing is an interest because it promotes the wellbeing of people. Documenting symptoms and recent medical history from the Registered Nurse help assist the doctor in diagnosing the patient. The career of a Registered Nurse resorts back to the history from which it derived. Becoming a Registered Nurse requires an established career in healthcare helping improve the aspect of the lives of everyone.
It’s been my desire, longing for a nursing career since I was in my primary and secondary school. At the age of 12, I began to look after children and baby-sitting then, from there, I gained the understanding of how to deal with children. In my medical career, I have been privileged to work alongside some of the most professional, dedicated, knowledgeable and compassionate nurses. I have seen first-hand the difference that they can make in a patient’s life and their family, during those unfortunate times when sickness and injury can be so overwhelming. The appreciation and respect that I have for nurses, as well as their indispensable contribution to the health care system, is what encourage me to pursue nursing as a profession.
